Just finished reading the latest issue of one of the leading outdoor magazines and a catalog from Cabela's.  What caught my attention was an ad from Bushnell in bold print, "Brighest in the World now better than ever .... our fully multi-coated lenses deliver an unrivaled 95% total light transmission ...".  Nikon's ad in the same magazine for the "All-New Prostaff  ....... awe-inspiring 98% light transmission.  Cabela's ad for their new Euro Scope,  MB-550 ion-assisted lens coating results in 99.9% light transmission - the best in the industry.

So the question is, how is brightness measured and is there a standarized method of testing?  Is this just misleading advertizing?

There is a standardized method to measure brightness, but it is virtually irrelevant for all practical purposes when you deal with decent quality riflescopes.

Riflescope advertising from pretty much every maker is by definition full of bovine manure.  It has no bearing on the quality of the product itself.  By and large you see the same words used to describe every scope from the cheapest chinese blister pack scopes to the highest end tactical scopes that are works of art.

300S&W & ILya,

Thanks for the info.  Yes, long read but I found it very informative and learned a lot more about scopes than just the hype on brightness.   I guess the scope ads are a lot like the ads for golf balls.  All manufacturers have the longest balls.  Gee, why doesn't that sound right.
