Hello all,
New to the forum and kind of restarting hunting as my son is now of the age that we can get out together. Budget is kind of a concern i need to find a scope to fit an older 300 win mag that i am going to need to put back in service as my son is going to take over my 30.06.
Hunting is mainly deer in a lot of poor weather and light conditions ..welcome to the Pacific Northwest.. shot distance from 150 to 500 yards on a stretch. I am a decent shot but can honestly say have never really understood optics , adjustments etc. I have always been a pull it up to the eye and pull the trigger type shooter and never shoot unless i am certain i can make the shot.
I have done a lot of reading here and most of the reccomended scopes are unfortunately out of my current budget range it seems.

Which scopes would you gurus really recommend and where should i buy it?

Thanks in advance

  First off,WELCOME to OT.

If you can do $400 plus shipping this is the scope I'd recommend.  You'd have to pay more than twice the price of this scope to get a significant increase in performance.

As to where to buy a scope you've come to the right place.   Bucky

+1 The Conquest is an excellent scope and has proven itself for a long time.

Oh and where to buy?!?! Right here at SWFA. If. You find it cheaper they will beat the price. I have done that for a scope and pair of binos!

If you dont really want to spend all 400..I would make my suggestion for going the lower cost route.  Nikon Prostaff in 3x9, with BDC reticle.  The prostaff is bright and clear, especially for 100 dollar or so scope.  I have two of them in use, and like them very much.

The BDC circles are not my favorite, but they would ok for larger game like you mentioned, and would help you pull and and shoot as you mentioned once you worked out the details.

I would give the nod to the Conquest as well.  Hard to beat that scope for the money.  It will meet your requirements no problem.  SWFA is the only place to buy it.  Love the caliber as well.

Hey All

Thanks for the advice
Looks like i will go with the conquest one quick question
My other scopes have always been 4-10-50 one is an old leopold and the other a burris,
will the conquest 3-9-40 pull in the same amount of light for the poor light conditions i always seem to find myself in??

Thanks again

If your going that way, dont forget the current 50 dollar rebate. (only on rapid z reticles though)

Objective lens of 40 mm divided by max power of 9 leaves with you 4.44.  Average pupil max is about 4 or 5, so should be good to go.  Main reason 3x9 scopes appear much brighter then others, imo.

I've looked through a few Conquest with different reticles and the glass looks good, got a good solid feel, simple, and I always hear postive feed back no matter who I talk with.

Might have to consider this scope myself

That Conquest will do better. For their time I'm sure your scopes were at the top of their class but your dealing with newer technologies now.  So better mechanics aside we're talking better lens material and coatings.  I upgraded my scopes (early 80's to mid 90's stuff) last summer.  BIG difference all around.

Might as well ask the question

Rings , Mounts, are they all equal enough?

Noticed a Minox 3-9-40 za3 on the sample list cheap dang just as i had decided i think i read that was a good scope too!!!

That is a GOOD deal on that Minox.  Maybe take some time to read this.  I'd trust this gentleman's opinion with my hard earned money (wait,I already have).

As far as rings and bases go you'd be hard pressed to do better on a hunting rifle than 1pc. Talleys. What exactly is the make and model of your rifle?

Thanks I will read the article.

The rifle is an "Interarms Mark X 300cal mag." Alexandria Virginia.

Cant even remember where or when i got it but its pretty old and will have to do.

Will have to do?!?!?!   That's all the rifle you'll ever need.  It's a 98 Mauser action.  Been  MANY A FINE custom rifle built on that Mark X.  Lots of aftermarket parts and accessories for it so if there's a little something about it you don't like it can changed to suit you.

  No problem at all.

Google Interarms Mark X Mauser sometime.  All kinds of info.

You don't "need" the Talleys but they do make life simpler.  Which Talleys,if you decide to go with them and as well as any other rings, will depend on the dimensions of the scope you get.

Hey All

Well i went off the board completely and bought a Zeiss Diavari C 3-9 36,
Im hoping it will work from what i have been able to read it should be great, It is the Made in Germany model so has the T? coatings?
It was one of those things that it showed up and i acted on it.
Going to put it on the Interams 300 mag

Opinions?

Thanks again

There are a lot of good scopes for under $400. The 3-9 Conquest is a good choice but I would also consider this:

http://swfa.com/Sightron-3-9x42-SII-Big-Sky-Riflescope-P9158.aspx - http://swfa.com/Sightron-3-9x42-SII-Big-Sky-Riflescope-P9158.aspx . It lists for $400.95, but has a $100 mail in rebate. That is a good buy, by my standards. Sightron's Customer service is also very good. I'd recommend the 3-12 version, but even with the rebate it is $50 over not including shipping.

good luck
