I've never heard of the Galileo line of binoculars, are they ok? The only web searches I've come up with is that they are discontinued, made in Japan, and that's about it. Any info out there? I've seen them on (e)bay and was just wondering, Thanks

BP,

I did own a pair of Galileo 10-30x60 zoom binoculars up until recently. Sold them at a yardsale I had. I doubt they were Japanese though. They weren't bad but suffered from the usual zoom binocular issues.

Galileo may have been one of those makes of binoculars that started out as Japanese but then went to Chinese production at some point. Or, they may sell multiple price point binoculars with the more expensive ones being of Japanese origin and the less expensive ones being of Chinese origin. I do remember seeing some connection with either Orion or Meade recently. I cannot remember where though.

If you are looking for a "bargain" binocular to start out with then check out something in the Meade or Orion lineup. Or, better yet, google "Dakota Elite" in 8x32, 7x28 or 10x42. You may be surprised what you find on that popular auction site.

;)
