I am looking at getting a new scope, and am thinking of going with one of these two scopes, what would your choice be between the two for deer and elk hunting in eastern oregon.

I'd wait for the Leupy VX6 soon to be out.

Waiting on the Vortex is going to be a problem most likely too. Vortex introduced the PST last year, and they are still having problems filling the orders. It seems the they are finally catching up on the SFP models, but that might change with the introduction of the H.S. series of scopes. The Leupold, while I am not big fan, is available and has good reviews.

If it is tourist season, why can't we shoot them?

Between those two, I would go with the VX-R.

If it was me I would favor the smaller objective, if I went with the VX-R it would be the 40mm.
The benefits are a better cheek position on the stock, less top heavy feel, and easier fit in scabbards. The only negative might be a minute or two of low light shooting time, which may be after legal time anyway.

Another vote for the VX-R line here.  These are a grate value in what you pay for what you get. Something we have been wanting from Leupold for some time now. I have decided on two of them for rifles I am making ready for this coming season. Have a look at the 4-12x40mm it seems to have everything at a better price than the 50.
Good luck!
