First off, love the sight.  One of the best places I've found with everyone talking wonders about their customer service.  Guess there's something to be said for being from Texas.

Ok, I bought my very first bolt action rifle, a remington 700 sps varmint heavy barrel .308.  Did a lot of research and looking around before buying.

I know it's been asked before, but I'm looking for a good scope for it.  My intent is to learn how to shoot up to 500yrds, eventually getting to the 1000yrd mark(not anytime soon though).  I have three scopes that I'm looking at, all right around the same price.  Either way, I want mil-dot.

#1 - http://swfa.com/Millett-4-16x50-TRS-1-Tactical-30mm-Riflescope-P8812.aspx - Millett 4-16x50 TRS-1 Tactical 30mm Riflescope   I haven't been able to find any reviews for this.  I am wanting to find out how durable it is as I've never heard of Millet.  From what I've seen on SWFA, some have complained that, although a 50mm objective, the edges are dark, taking away from the benefit of a large objective.

#2 - http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-10x42-Tactical-Riflescope-P499.aspx - SWFA SS 10x42 Tactical Riflescope  I have not seen one bad review for this.  It looks to be a very solid scope.  My only concern is that it is a fixed power scope.  A few of my co-workers I've talked to have tried to steer me away from them, including one of the snipers on our swat team.

#3 - http://swfa.com/Nikon-45-14x40-Buckmaster-Riflescope-P42210.aspx - Nikon 4.5-14x40 Buckmaster Riflescope   I've started looking at this scope as Nikon has a lifetime warranty, and comes with a free mildot master(mail-in).  From the couple reviews I've read, people really seem to like it.  My only concern is no target turrets.  I have been to Nikon's website and see that you can order target turrets seperately.
What I'd like is some good solid info on how well the Millet and Nikon will hold up durability-wise as I don't want to worry about banging the rifle on something and either losing my zero or messing up anything on the rifle.  I'm not putting together a trophy rifle to sit on my mantle to look at, I want to be able to "use" it.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S.  Not sure if it helps, but the ammo I will be using will be Hornady 168grn A-Max Match.  Base is going to be a Weaver tactical picatinny 20moa and Burris XTR low rings.

As of write this I have the buckmaster(older one) & super sniper in hand. For me Super Sniper is great scope thus far (just got few days ago). Glass as far as I can tell is as good or better than B.M. only I was worried about being a fixed power but I'm pretty sure it will more than do the job. Now B.M. & me go back few years never had anything go wrong with the scope, I have had bad mounts & rings tho. With set up you have for mounts & rings should be any troubles with either scope. Are you going to just target shoot or what?

My initial intent is to use it for target shooting.  Once I feel like I'm getting a good handle on it, I plan to take it hunting.  At the very least, i know here in Texas there is always an over-abundance of hogs that need "dealing with".

Are u pretty new to shooting?(As much as I may get hell for it) If so I'd say go with the B.M. & unless they have changed in last few year the B.M. do have target turrets. U can always up grade later

You didn't mention what this scope is for. If you're going to be predator hunting with it, and unless you're planning on doing long range hunting for big game with it, I would avoid the target turrets- they are pretty useless, except for long range hunting of big game.

Of the 3 you mentioned I would go with Nikon.

Am I new to shooting in general?  No.  I have a lot of experience with pistols and what I would consider "moderate" experience with ar's due to the military.  This is my very first bolt/precision rifle.  I've never shot anything with an optic on it, although I don't see it taking me too long to figure it out.

First of all welcome to OT.

With that being said, I would rule out the Nikon because of the 1 inch tube and no knobs. If you want to learn how to shoot long range you might as well get something that will hold up to a lot of knob turning.

The Millet, I have no personal experience with, but I am skeptical of a lot of bells and whistles for that price. It might be the real deal. I am sure someone will chime in that has or had one.I will watch and see what people say on here.

I have owned the SSx16 and it has been a great scope for over 5 years of sevice. I learned a lot about shooting with that scope and still have it. I am trying to replace it with a good variable but so far It is going to take about 8 bills to come close to something better. It is tough, repeatable and would def get you started at long range shooting. For the money I think the glass is great. The tracking is spot on and you can dial and dial and the knobs stay crisp and repeatable. If you are shooting targets and not moving game a fixed power scope at 10 plus mag is fine. I would bet you will stay on the highest power with your variable if target shooting.

You posted that you will hunt with it after I wrote this. so disregard the part about the fixed. It is something to consider.

The price range you are in You may be well served to look on the samplelist.com for a 2.5-10 Bushnel 4200 elite. It is a huge step up from the buckmaster. 2.5 will give you a much wider field of view for fast pigs in heavyer cover. 10 should be good for anything out to 400 yds at least. If you want the best bang for your buck at $299 this is it. There shows to be 2 left at this price at this time.

Just my 2 cents but the SS10X will be simpler to learn on for the use of learning MilDot.

I did not see where Bigblue21 wanted to learn Mil-dot. I focused on his wanting to shoot hogs in South Texas. My bad. Still the price and quality of this scope is going to be hard to beat. 10x fixed is not the best choice in heavy cover.

Welcome to OT!  Of the 3 you mention, I would probably go with the nikon. If it was going to be strictly target shooting I would choose the SS, but for hunting I dont like any fixed power over 6x.  If your not dead set on mil dots, the elite 4200 that 3_tens mentioned is gonna be hard to beat!

Learning how to use mildot and using the mildot master it will be far easier to do with a fixed powered scope, hence the SS 10X recommendation. No guess work or wondering if your on the right power for ranging.  (you do know that on a variable scope that is not FFP, fast focal plane, that the mildots can only be used on one power for ranging?)

Now if you want cariable and want to range with it the SS 3-9 is about as good as it comes.  They pop up used on the samplelist for about $500 sometimes.  They are a FFP scope and can range on any power you can see.

Millets have been loved and hated for a while.  Those that have a good one swear by them, but there are fewer of them than of the stories of troubled units.  Then if you do have issues, now that Bushnell ownes Millet you get to deal with the spotty Customer service they have.  Nikons customer service has been a roller coaster, some have good expereience, other horrible.  I can tell you this, IF, and I do mean IF you somehow broke a 10X SS (and keep in mind we had one member drive over his rifle and scope with his truck and it didn't mess up the scope) SWFA would stand behind it no problems or questions.  They are THAT GOOD.  If you dont' want headaches and truely want to learn the SS10X is the clear winner.

I agree with alot and disagree with some in this thread. Here is my opinion. If you plan to use it for target shooting get the SS10X if you plan on using it for hunting the Nikon is a good scope for that. If you want it to do both save up another $250 and get the SS3-9 FFP. Since it is first focal plane the power doesn't affect the mils. It does everything the Nikon and the ifxed 10 combined into one scope and then some. It is hands down a better scope than any you have listed for your DUAL application and that scope will outlast us both. That is my reccomendation.

first, 308 is not for 1000 yard, repeated errors, 308 is just 800 yard.
You need a barrel 30 "1000 yard

military settings, is only ss 10x42, not 12x, 16x or 20x
scope variables are not military, the civilian market is full of lies, a lot of business companies

I have hit steel at 1300 yards with my 19" barrel .308.  Just because the military says its effective range is 800 yards doesn't mean they will not shoot considerably farther.

Also military does use variable scopes.  Marines used to use 10x unertl, but they now use a variable scope as does the army.

Why does it matter that the civilian market uses something other than the military?  Why does that make them full of lies?

Fortunately for many, I have  30 "barrel 1-14" twist barrels for 1000 yard
< ="text/">p { margin-bottom: 0.1in; line-height: 120%; }

The problem is  speed, and stability, 20 "does not stabilize 308 (20" -2.8 "Cartridge dimensions = 17" real barrel) you need  barrel 28 "-30 At 1000 yards the bullet velocity Supersonic

1:10 twist is best for 200 and 210 grain bullets
1:12 twists were perfect for 165’s through 180′
1:13 twists were still are the norm for 30 inch barrels shooting 147’s and 155′
1:14 twists with excellent results. Sub MOA at 1000 is the norm with such stuff.

I shoot with some guys that regularly shoot 1000+ with 15" barreled handguns. Some are 308. At last years WY-Shot I witnessed PD kills at over 1100 yards with Handguns. Your books on long range specs are out of date.
