I have a surplus Swiss K31 and a clamp on scope mount for it that doesn't involve modifying the rifle.  The rifle is fantastically accurate, and I need a good optic for it.  I've got a cheapy on it now that I just use for testing, and it's short eye relief caused my forehead to get personally acquainted with the scope's lense Shocked

The clamp on mount is actually an offset mount, roughly 3/4 of inch to the right of bore centerline.  Because of how the cheek weld works in that setup, I'm going to need something with generous eye relief.  The scope on it now is a Bushnell with no labeling on it; I believe it to be from their Banner line, which is listed as having 3 inches of eye relief.

Because of the peculiarities of the mount, it needs to be relatively compact so as not to interfere with ejection of spent cases.  Unlike most bolt guns, the K31 ejects to the left, to about the 10:30 position.  However, the scope is close enough to the action that it doesn't need to have any left side adjustment knobs.  While I'd like something with high magnification, high magnification and compact don't go together.  I'm willing to settle for 4x magnification, but no less.  Variable or fixed power is fine.  Above all, it needs to have forgiving eye relief.

I'd like to keep the budget under $350, so I won't be getting any $2000 Swarovskis or Nightforces.  What do you guys recommend?

I don't have personal experience with them yet, but in looking for an inexpensive scope with long eye relief, I've found the following so far:
Nikon African 1-4
Bushnell Trophy XLT with DOA 200 or DOA 250 reticle
Bushnell Elite 3200 with DOA 250 reticle
Nikon TurkeyPro
Nikon SlugHunter

I don't know if they meet your requirements for compactness, but they all have generous eye relief.

I have Burris Compact (now Timberline) 4x20 on my K31 and it works well.

You can also try Sightron S2 4x32; it is a compact scope with nice long eye relief.

I would not go there.  I love my Leupold scopes, but since being on this forum they do not seem to be well liked.  If you do a search you can find plenty of threads that will address that without creating another.  I have to admit, they are overpriced for what you get, but to me, no more than the Zeiss Conquest line and love my one and only Conquest.  You can look for the Leupold on the Sample List.  The Sightron mentioned is nice, great optic as well as the Burris.  Many choices actually.

Nikon Omegas or Nikon Slughunters. Both have 5" eye relief, and a fairly large eyebox.
They also have accordingly reduced field of view, as with all long eye relief scopes. They're also inexpensive.

The Minox ZA5 is supposed to have > 4 inches of eye relief.  Awaiting shipment of mine to see for myself...

Just my impression from reading and searching the forum.  Sorry for any misunderstanding.  The search I was referring to was with respect to Leupold versus other scope manufacturers and the debates that ensued.  My interpretation was that long time forum members had a general dislike of the Leupold product for various reasons to include, but not limited to, optics that were believed to be inferior to other similarly priced scopes, being overpriced for what you got, the Leupold advertising machine and some other less tangible aspects.  When I refer to "...do not seem to be well liked" or "general dislike", I do not meant that forum members believe that all Leupold scopes are garbage, but in general trend away from them in favor of other brands.  Not to infrequently certain models of Leupold scopes were singled out for their specific attributes, but in general, the trend was toward other manufactures.  If my interpretation of these threads was incorrect then I can only apologize for my aptitude.  I mean no disrespect to anyone.

none  taken, i just wanted you to know that we arent the anti leupold nation here. we recommend a lot of leupold scopes for certain applications, and its hard to deny the facts that they have by far and large the best selection of options and great customer service. while a lot of us do agree that they seem to ask a "premium" for their products, its a free country. if they dropped the prices of the vx2 and vx3 even $50 i think we would all be more inclined to say they are in the ball park with the rest of the scopes they compete with. i'll be honest with you, i feel that way. i think they may ask a little much for what they give you in return, but thats business. your 100% welcome here friend, i invite you to continue to contribute your thoughts experiences and opinions with us in the future.Wink

You know, I do not own that many Leupold scope for the very reason they ask too much for what they offer.  The ones I do own are because of their selection.  They offer gloss scopes in many models which few companies do and other special finishes are available such as gun metal gray.  Long eye relief on high recoiling rifles in their 1.5-5x range scope is excellent for those application.  You are exactly right about coming off of their prices in the VX-II and VX-3 models as well as the lesser models, as well as offering better sale prices.  When was the last time you saw any real deals and I do not mean those minor specials with the upgrade of the VX-3 line.  I appreciate your feedback and look forward to more time on OT.

quarterbore I read these forums often and I too have detected the same sentiment towards Leupold.  I own two of the VX-II 2-7x33 and really like the scopes.  I also own two VX-3 6.5-20 x50 Long Range scopes and they have served me very well.  I think Leupold has made a strong hit with their new VX-R line and I also plan to purchase a VX-R 2-7x33 Firedot.  It is extremely hard to beat leupold's variety of options as well as their unparalleled customer service.  One reason perhaps Leupold does not lower their prices is because of their steady level of sales.  I spoke with a Leupold rep at the Orlando SHOT show a few years ago and he stated that even during economic downturns the sales of Leupold products remain steady.  If sales were to drop off dramatically then Leupold would possibly consider price reductions or even a price freeze.  From looking at wholesale prices it appears Leupold takes at least one price increase annually if not two.  As long as the market yields positive sales growth I doubt if Leupold will change their pricing strategy.  If any of us were the CEO of Leupold I doubt we would lower prices as long as the market indicates positive growth with strong sales numbers.

This forum isn't anti-Leupold.  It's just that those who really don't like Leupold are usually pretty vocal about their dislike.  The majority just want a good scope for a fair price.  In that regard, sometimes Leupold hits the mark, sometimes not.
