hello all,

I'm a newbie thats been reading alot on this forum and i need some help.
I been in the market for a decent all around scope something that was good close range and long .

rifle is an rockrivers ,ar-15, .223 or 5.56mm
friend asked me if i wanted to start shooting varmit matches which is small targets at 100y,200y,300y

what im looking for in a scope would be
1- sort of like the cds option from leupold (vx-3) (but i dont know how good they are)

2-would like a scope that could do everything (deer hunting, coyote, target) i know that i cant use a .223 for deer hunting, but at this time i only have the money for one decent scope so if i had to i could use this scope on other guns like a .270 (thats why i was looking at the bushnell elite 6500 2.5-16x

those are the 2 scopes i been looking at  so far- price range 500-750ish

I run a SS 3x9x42 on my S&W MP-15 and absolutely love it.  The thing is built like a tank and just works.  It gives you mil/mil so your turrets match your reticle.  For the money, hard to find a better value.
IMHO 3x9 is plenty for 300 yds, but that's up to you.

Read about it here from a pro sniper - http://www.opticstalk.com/swfa-ss-39x42-review-by-mike-miller_topic23715.html - http://www.opticstalk.com/swfa-ss-39x42-review-by-mike-miller_topic23715.html

Another option to consider would be the Vortex Viper PST 2.5x10x44 - http://swfa.com/Vortex-Viper-PST-Rifle-Scopes-C2860.aspx - http://swfa.com/Vortex-Viper-PST-Rifle-Scopes-C2860.aspx   You can choose between mil/mil or moa/moa and get an illuminated reticle.

Sorry I can't comment on the Bush 6500, but I'm sure someone else will offer some advice too.

Good luck!

Since your plans with your varmint rifle don't extend beyond 300 yards, by the looks of it, why not invest in TWO scopes.  One 2.5-10x50mm Bushnell 4200 for your .223 and a 3-9x40mm Bushnell 4200 for your .270.

I dont' think that you will be displeased AND you'll come in under your budget.  4200s are exceptional, tried and true optics for the money and are on clearances all over the place due to their upcoming merger with the 3200 series.

Besides, swapping scopes between two rifles, serving two different purposes is going to run you a good chunk of change in ammo each and every time you do so...

Just my .02
