So a buddy came to me Friday and asked me to "sight in" his AR.  He had his aimpoint on a carry handle mount and as you can see a lot of "tacticool" stuff he will never use on it as well.  I asked him what he did with it and he said shoot at bottles and cans and stuff.... anyway  I couldn't see leaving it on the carry handle and moved it to the rail so he can cowitness. I shot about 200 rounds with it like this and actually came to like it pretty good once i got use to it.  I can already tell just in talking to him on the phone he ain't to happy but given the POI vs the POA  I would have had to use a zero way out there to get it practical and the cheek weld was non existant with it mounted so high.  I've told him to go buy a stripped flat top upper and I'd swap it over for him but he's cheap, and thinks that if it looks cool its good to go.  Anyway here it is after i changed it.  What do yall think about the aimpoint set up this way?

I used a red dot like that for a while.  But my mount actually was attached to the carry and not he handguard.  It is just a scout setup that we know works well, I did not mind it at all.

The possible problem I see with that particular mount is those types of handguards can easily shift and move so that alone could change his POI.
The one I have looks more like this.  Which will give a much more solid mount.

My mount was a little lower than that particular mount and not quite so blockly looking.  Cowitness was not quite possible still, but the cheek weld was still pretty good.

This was way back when I was first getting into ARs.  I was using one of those BSA red dots Loco, which have the mount on the bottom, so it allowed a very low mount.  I used it like that til I got smart and bought a flat top upper to put on my gun.  Man what a difference.

IT was one like this.

BSA Red Dot Scopes

BSA Red Dot 30mm Scope
