I want to know if i should shoot 165 or 180 grain ammo with a 300 wsm, i will be using it for both deer and elk hunting, in eastern Oregon and the elk will be spike only if that makes a difference.

Either will work perfectly fine.  I would shoot both to see which one your gun likes better.  If it was me, I would lean towards the 180 gr just because I like the heavier bullets.  I actually shoot 190s in my 300 WM and love the performance they give.

i usually shoot 180's in my super .30's, ive had three of them and all three shoot the same sierra pro hunter 180gr bullet very well.

I'd go with 180's.  A 180 in the same bullet design will have higher BC and better SD.  But it all depends on which bullet you select and which two bullets in each weight are compared.

I shot an elk with the 300 WSM this fall using Barnes MX 165 grain at about 140 yards. I recover one bullet, but it weighed about 40 grains. I was not impressed with that. I've used Barnes triple shocks before and had better results with those. At least in this instance.  I loaded some 180 grain bullets with MAGPRO powder and the velocity was around 3050 ft. sec..I think I can up the power charge a little more to increase the velocity a little more.Big Smile

You have to shoot what your rifle likes, mine is a tack driver using Federals 180 gr TSX. I'd like to try a 190 gr bullet, does anyone make loaded ammo using a 190 gr bullet?

Federal loads the 190 gr matchkings if you want to try them out. I handload the hornady 190s myself and get good results.
