Welcome aboard, John.

I would take a look at the SS 3-9 based upon your stated intentions.  It is a real value for overall quality vs cost and is in a very popular magnification range.

Vortex has some nice offerings at

Welcome to OT. Got a budget in mind? For under $200 the vortex 2-7 viper is a very good buy and fully up to the ranges you mention. For $399 the zeiss conquest is popular and there are several nice Burris scopes on sale right now . Basically for the ranges you are looking at a good 2-7 or 3-9 is plenty of magnification for deer and elk sized game, and with the 270 mag you can sight 3" high at 100yds and shoot point blank out to 300 and hold just slightly high at 400.

The bushnell elite series of scopes seem to be decent.  While they're not top notch they are good for what you have to pay.  I own a couple of them(one on a hunting rifle that takes a beating) and they both still function properly. I'm debating if I should purchase another currently.

2nd on the burris scopes on special right now.  I know a lot of people think leupold is over priced, but you can't really go wrong with a Leupold, and Nikon makes a pretty decent scope in the lower price ranges.  I also think Weaver makes some decent mid priced scopes.
