OK guys here it is the story of my Biggest Little Buck.
Around the first part of November I had just gotten into my stand was getting everything sat up, when I looked  across the draw &  saw what I thought was a little basket 4x4 with real heavy base. ( under 100yrd) With out thinking picked up my rifle & took aim. I shot nothing happen he just stood there trying  figure what had happen. I took aim again & nothing happen I was like what the hell, As I look I could see where my bullet had hit the thorn bush in front of me, ( I was using my 22-250) As slid to my left he slowly walked down the hill into the  thicker stuff never to get another shot at him.  I sat there for about 30 mins to see if he  would come back out  he never did. I took out my pocket chainsaw & went  to work making some clear shooting lanes. For the next few days never did see anything worth shooting if I did it was out range or on someone else land. On November 26th we got fresh bunch of snow, I was like HELL YEAH!!! But I had to run to town and do some ruining around & pick up my new bow. Dumb a$$ me forgot what day it really was bad day to be in town . By time I got home it around noon went inside & my oldest was like Dad you going hunting to day? I was like I don't know? She asked well can we go out & look see we can see anything? Sure I said just give a little bit I just got home. After about an hour an half I was like OK lets go see if we can see anything. As glasses around not see anything , thats when the does started coming. I was glass another spot when Morgan (oldest) says whats that up there by the brush? I looked and was Oh !! thats a buck grab the spotting scope. I look at  saw it was the heavy 4x4 I had missed early in the month. As I told Morgan to grab my range finder & my pack he started making a scrap line. I knew at this point he wasn't going anywhere to fast. I took a range on him it was 376 yrd & right below a rock I shoot at thats 525 yrd. I turned my scope up for the scope up for the shot.  Took the shot he rared up on he hind legs & bolted. At this point I was say lots nice words. He ran about 50 yrd or some & stop just stood there. I ranged him again 342 this time. Went turn my scope down for it & realized when I had first dialed the MOA up I had done it for 476 yrds not 376. At this point I thought I had shot his antler off. Got into another shoot position took aim BANG!!! nothing he stood there. I check my MOA again to make sure I didn't mess up again rechecked my range & everything was golden took aim Bang WTF nothing then I saw it damn thorn brush had gotten into my shooting lane again. I move a little all the while this damn buck isn't going anywhere I know @ this point his hit but I don't know how bad. I take aim once again Bang his runs back to the spot here I first shot @ him that day. He beds down at this point I know for 100% he hit get real good. So what  do I do take aim yet again.Bang he freaking gets up but slowly this time walks 40 yrds looks like he drops. I knew I was in for some work at this point. My step dad was stand behind me said he seen him drop into ravine. Got all my gear together for a long night. Called my brother told him what was up he was like I'll be there in about 30 mins. Me & Morgan we took out to see what we could find. Got up were I had made the first shot, walk around a little seen where he had bedded down , found some blood good thing for snow. I fallowed it it look he was head for the ravine I knew if went in it was going be all night long getting him out. I walk a little farther seen where he slid at I was like Damn he gone into the ravine. Looked a little farther down and seen he got hung up on some brush. I yelled for Morgan to come on up, As I walk up on him first seen he was a double eye guards I got even closer seen it he had a triple eye guards on the other side. This point I'm as happy as kid in a candy store. All in all he was a 7x6 non typical. My first shot had hit him right long the jaw bone & eye would have killed him in a few days. Found that my 2nd shot was heart shot. I thought my 3rd was a miss wasn't till I got him skin out that found it had broke the back in the front shoulder blade.

Now you guys may think this where the story ends NOPE !!!! This where it turns into a $hit storm you could say. I thought I'd do a full skull mount, I cleaned it up and got it ready to boil all the nasty stuff off. Put the pan on the BBQ to boil, I did so went side to have dinner & BS with my family. Seeing the day before my wife had just miscarried. We was at my mother for thanksgiving. OK to the story, About 30 mins late I go check on it everything good. I go back inside @ which point end in a big augment with my mother never fails when she drinks. I end up forgetting for a while about the skull. After about an hour or so I'm Oh sh!t I go outside to find the BBQ lind is down on the skull I open it Damn near fall over & cry little a little baby when I see the antlers have been Baked To Hell.  I take them they start to break off, Now I'm really ready to cry. I think I may have shead a tear a little. lol So now try to super glue it back together & maybe find someone to make a cast of them for me.

Well now I guess you want pics Huh? OK here goes,

The price on the cast is going to run about $10 an ins so I think it will cost a little over $100, I should be working on it now but get a little upset with my self every time I look @ it Smile

That really sucks.  Fire and heat will destroy antlers something fierce.  A couple years ago I was over in chippy creek montana looking for morels in a last falls forest fire. (found about 30 lbs) I also found 14 deer and one moose shed in about a 5 acre area! all of them had been burned.  One was a winter kill.  When I first found it I about shat my pants.  I think it would have scored over 300+ nontypical.(no BS seriously my brother was with me and he can verify it) I picked it up and it literally went into almost powder.  I tried to pick up all the pieces and pack it out.(like 300yds to the car.) by the time I got their the only thing left was the bases.  Total points on the left side was 16 and the right had 18.  Total spread on outside was probably close to 36 inches! I wish to god I had taken a picture before I picked it up.  And some of the other sheds I picked up were probably close to 180-190 inches but they all broke as well.  I've yet to make it back for a shed hunting trip into the area.  If their is anyone close I can turn them onto the spot.  I'm sure the deer are wintering below their now where it didn't burn. (A couple of areas the fire skipped over) I would have looked around for sheds their if the weather hadn't have gone to crap.(the road was starting to wash away! raining like crazy and lightning hit all around us.) Also above this area it didn't burn either.  however this area is about 8 miles behind a locked gate, and to access it from below you will need climbing gear(like rope, and rock climbing gear)  Or walk about 2 miles around the cliffs section up near vertical slopes.  Just look up the old chippy creek fire from 3yrs ago. stay on the western edge of the burn  on the south facing slope and find the cliffs and you'll know the spot I'm talking about. This is also close to the indian res.

Have you had a reproduction of the antlers made yet?  Or are you just trying to stick them back together with an epoxy?

I've been contemplating recently with playing around making casts.  Doesn't seem as if it would be extraordinarily hard to accomplish.  I figured I might start with some shed antlers and if I get decent results then moving on to antlers on skull.

I thought maybe you would find it a good project for these rainy spring days.  A few dollars at wally world for some fiberglass cloth and resin, a couple wing nuts, some cling wrap, and an order to buy some casting material and you would be well on your way.  Maybe its best left to a professional but it might make for fun new hobby too.

And next time you want to clean a skull, pick a day when the wife is away and boil it in the house on the stove.  That's what I did.Cool.
