Either one works fine when properly made.  Steel is a little heavier and, in principle, a little tougher.  On the other hand, if scratched, it can rust.

Bottom line, it would be unlikely to be a factor in my decision.

I really don't think so at least not anymore. The only scope I ever dented was a old K10 weaver I had years ago I doubt if it had been aluminum the results would have been different or vice versa. A dented scope is a dented scope and if you give either a good whack the result will probably not be good. I do know the newer scopes are much lighter than the old steel scopes.Oh by the way I continued to use the K10 for a number of years with the dent. Didn't have to re-zero either.

The alluminum ones are pretty tough these days and no worry about rust.

Is anyone even making a steel tube scope anymore?

I have a Kahles 6x steel tube scope that is about 35 years old.
It has been through the mill, and still performs extremely well.
