I have a 300 wsm and enjoy it a lot! But it is expensive to feed if you don't reload yourself. The Savage or the Tikka would be my choice, in the order. I also know first hand, that a 30-06 is more than adequate to take an elk. So is the 7mm-08, and the 308. All three of which are cheaper to buy ammo, and hurt less on the shoulder.

TIKKA stainless synthetic. 300 WSM is one of my favorites.   The stainless Savage accustock guns are quite good also I have one in .243 that I like very much.   Dont think you would go wrong with either of those two.

Any drawbacks to having a detachable magazine if you handload for it?

I like the Savage and the Tikka out of those choices, but you might want to put some thought into that muzzle brake on the Savage if you hunt without ear protection, that would make me lean toward the Tikka.  Your shooting buddies and hunting partners will thank you for not having the brake.  Good Luck.

How bout a Weatherby Vanguard .. My son has a standard 300WSM stainless and it's a 1 MOA or better with just about everything we feed it ...

Of your 3 , I like the Abolt

My model 11 Savage has the Detachable box, and has no drawbacks at all. Savage shorty's are little bit  longer than say a Remmy 700. Which allows a bit more room for long bullets. When I tried the Berger 185's my COAL was at 2.93, and they fed from the magazine just fine.

I have a Remington CDL SF in 300 WSM and really like it a lot. It's a real tack driver but I agree that any 300 magnum, short or long eats expensive ammo and wont do anything better than a 30 06 can do except shoot flatter.

And burn out barrels fasterClown I really do like my short mag but the price of ammo for it is making me a bit cantankerous latelySad

It's possible to find a LNIB Kimber in 300wsm, which is a dandy rifle.  If your not into used my choice is for the Abolt.

Remember what the late Robert Ruark said, when hunting "bring enough gun" IMHO, it's all about the correct bullet for the task and proper shot placement.

i wont argue that, but i will say that in the end my 270gr bullet out of my .375H&H will kill a deer extra dead and so will a 55gr bullet from my 22-250.Big Grin

its all relative to the size of bullet you use.Bucky the bigger the bullet, the higher the degree of "extra dead" you get.

My opinion if it counts for anything is if your stuck on getting a 300 win variety I would advise to get a standard 300 wm before a wsm or the remington version. WSM ammo is more expensive than the regular 300 wm and the performance difference is nil from what I have read. I dont own either but my friend has a savage in 300 wsm and its just too expensive to shoot. He spends 15 bucks more per box than I do for my .30-06. I can get a box for as low as $17 bucks, the cheapest 300 wsm around here is around $34.  Thats when I buy factory ammo. I reload for range sessions as the factory ammo I have tried does not shoot nearly as well as my loaded ammo.
If it were me I would stick with the trusty 30-06

Mine is in a Remington CDL.It is one of the most accurate rifles I own and the one I grab the most of the time when I go hunting.I reload for it so I don't worry too much about ammo cost and she doesn't seem to fussy about what I feed it either. Will it out do my 30-06?Yes,it will and it should,I use ten more grains of powder in it than I do in my 30-06.Will it out do my 300 Win. Mag?I don't think so,at least I haven't used a powder in it that will, but I shoot about ten grains less powder in it than I do in the 300 Win. Mag.So in MHO it fills the gap between the 30-06 and the 300 Win. Mag and depending on how you load it as to which one it's the closest to.It's a great round, recoil is not that bad either and out of all the short mags,I think this one will be around for awhile.
