I wonder if anyone here can help me get some trigger time with my SS10HD in my apt each night?

Here's what I mean.  I want to dry fire without going out back and freaking out the neighbors.  The 10HD won't focus within my indoor space.  Does anyone here have the optics background to tell me if there is a lense I can have made to hang over the objective to bring the focus in close?  I wouldn't shoot it this way, just dry fire, and I wouldn't need a great image, just be good enough to self coach on follow through.

Would a convex lense work for this or would it require a whole system of lenses that isn't possible?

To put the numbers in a form an optician would be able to use, would I be looking for something like +0.25 or similarly weak?

Thanks for listening.

I'm thinking minimum focus distance on that optic is 50 meters.  While close up lenses are quite common for camera lenses they have little application for rifle scopes.  The lower price model Super Snipers like the 6x42 will focus down to 10 meters which will work for you indoors fairly well. I have never spent a lot of dry fire time and I would suggest you have a second rifle possibly a 22 and consider placing a 6x42 Super Sniper on it and get in more actual range time with a low recoil type cartridge. Regular work with a 22 will greatly enhance your ability with high power rifles. Other than that buy a pellet gun and bullet trap and shoot it indoors.

The pellet gun is a great suggestion Wes and probably alot more entertaining.

I have some 22s and use them as mentioned, but the point is I can't go to the range every night.  Yes, the scope has a minimum around 50.  I have a desire to come in to around 7 to 10 with a clip on solution.

The SS10xHD focuses down to 10m according to the SWFA web site.

Rear Focus Adjustment (m): 10 - infinity.

Yea Right  ---  I told them that wasnt the case they just never updated the website --- I have the scope --- and about 50 meters is the minimum focus.  The old style scopes do focus down to about 10 meters but the HD is an entirely different system and whoever originally entered the info did so without knowing the correct answer and just used the specs from the old style.

dryfire can also be more harmful on rimfires as compared to centerfires, so i wouldn't particularly go out and buy a rimfire just for dryfiring either.

another option would be to get quick release rings for the SS so you will save your zero, get a rimfire scope that will focus down and put in quick release rings as well.  swappem out as needed.

One simple lens is unlikely to do it.  For most simple attachments, you will end up with a giant headache from staring through the scope.

Doublechaz,

I don’t know how you are set up in your apartment but you can use something like a kitchen table 4 or 5 feet from the window with the room semi dark (not bathed in light or back lit) and your neighbors will not be disturbed by your practice and if you do receive a visit from the local constabulary you are well inside the confines of your home.  (Disclaimer: not legal advice)
