I have seen two different online pictures of the Leupold German #4 reticle.  Which one is the "real" Leupold German #4?

A:

B:

A looks like a German #4 to me.

B looks like a Schmidt and Bender #7.

The below link is an illustration of what I see in a lot of places online that has caused me to be confused.

I'm looking for a low magnification, variable scope with a reticle similar to the "A" example in my first posting here. Either a VXII 1.5-4x20 that I send off to the Leupold custom shop for the German #4, or a VXIII 1.5-5x20 that has the German #4 as a stock reticle offering.

The scope is for my Sako AV 375 H&H. I hunt at close ranges and often in brush. The German #4, (example A above), seems like it would do the job pretty well.  I'm on a VXII budget, hence the need for a custom shop reticle installation.

I have a VX-II 3-9x40 with German #4. It is more like the first reticle you posted with the very bold
heavy crosshair posts... although not exactly. The subtension between the heavy crosshair posts is
closer than you illustrated, but is still wide at 25" at 9x at 100 yards. In addition, the "fine"
crosshairs are heavier than illustrated, and certainly heavier than the standard duplex fine
crosshairs.

Here's the best I could do for a reticle shot:

I think the Leupold German #4 is too much of a good thing for general hunting. The fine crosshairs
are too heavy for precision past 200 yards: at 300 the center covers up over 5" of the target. The
thin section opening is too wide as well: if you set the power ring at 6x (for maximum light
transmission), the heavy posts are bracketing about 45 inches at 100 yards (20+ inches at 50
yards) - - far too wide to use as an aiming reference in low light on most animals. For hunting very
large game under 50 yards it could be useful, but I think the Swarovski or Kahles 4A reticle is better
as an all-around choice.

Well your Highness, you must have read my mind. Today I made the leap and a Kahles 1.1-4x20 with a 4a reticle gets to live at my house. Also, if I may ask, how did you do the picture of the reticle that you posted?  Very nice.

It's "H"ighness, please. I used a Canon S400 digital, no flash at 2.8x magnification. Pain in the
arse as well.

My Kahles with 4a is going to be Xmas ordered tomorow!

Fellas:

Please give us a review of your respective scopes when you get them and evaluate them.

Is there a general template for scope evals, posted as a sticky, somewhere on the forum? If not, maybe someone could do one.  That way you wouldn't have to read me saying, "the scope was real cool. I liked the way I could see things in it."

Hi guys,

First post here and I know that this thread is really old, but I'm kind of a reticle nut and I thought that I would add to it. Smile

Picture "A" is sort of a zoomed in view and does not really represent what the #4 looks like in a full view through the scope.

When Premier reticles was manufacturing and installing reticles for Leupold, there were three German #4 reticles that they offered. The first, which is the standard #4, is pretty much like picture "B" and Premier described the posts as being about 4 times thicker than the standard duplex with similar spacing. The second is the #4a which is the same thickness as the #4, but with the post spaced farther apart similar to a wide duplex. The third is the #4e which they describe as having posts 7 time thicker than the standard duplex and it also has the wider spacing like the #4a. The #4e is the only #4 that Leupold currently offers according to a conversation that I had with them earlier this year.

I recently had Burris install a 3P#4 (their version of the #4) in an old Fulfield 4x Mini. This looks like piture "B". When I get a chance to take a pic through the scope, I'll post back here.

In the meantime, here's a look at Leupold's #4e in one of my M8 2.5x scopes. Wink

Here's the 3P#4 that Burris installed in my 4x Mini...
This should close to what a standard German #4 looks like.

Should have gotten an illuminate reticle.

I have a Kahles 1.1-4x24 with the 4A. It is an outstanding scope and befitting of a .375 H&H.
Regarding illumination, I also have a Kahles 1.1-4x24 CSX with the illuminated C-Dot. It has the edge in low light and thick cover. For longer range shots I would rather use my 4A.
