Sort of devils advocate here. Camoed and painted guns are less appealing after they have have been used a bunch. Chip here , a worn mark there. Some look down right ratty.

I had 3 rifles CeraKoted, Cost around 200.00 per rifle depending.. Im very happy with his work, each piece is lightly blasted down to bare metal, then cleaned with Denatured Alcohol , I think thats what he used.. No finger prints, no touchy with hands at all.. Perfectly clean then he paints the rifle.. If one does not know what the hell he's doing you will end up putting to much paint on certain areas that only can hand a light coat (as in the bolt, etc) or maybe magazine, .....My rifles came out perfect in flat black, my kimber is flat black and trimmed in Titanium including mounts and rings.....The finish will never allow moisture in like Blueing does, blueing is not a very good moisture barrier...

Ive heard good things about Dura Coat as well but no experience.. Also there are 2 differet methiods of applying CeraKote and the one that uses the special oven at 250 degrees is supposed to be the best....For myself, this is the ony way to paint a rifle because this stuff is really tough and Im just tired of screwing with blueing....Actually I prefer stainless the best!Wink Im getting ready to have my Sako sent off for a McMillian Marble Stock in A-5, the rifle will remain stainless, its a hunting rifle with a Tactical look I guess one would call it.. Should be alot of funBucky

Lots of guys out there coating rifles who worked for Maaco in a previous life. W.E. Birdsong has literally coated hundreds of thousands of guns for every type of use you can think of, every branch of the military, gov agency's, SWAT teams you name it. They do more guns in a month than all the others combined (or have at one time). As an example, I had a rifle down there to be finished and Walter Birdsong called me to say that he had to push mine back a month because he just got notice that he had to Black-T 5 thousand handguns for the FBI. Made it sound like you and I would talk about having to get the oil changed on our car today. They've coated weapons for the military that even Dale Clifford never heard of. I'm not knocking some of the finishes out there today only saying that W.E. Birdsong is the only guy I would have coat one of my guns especially if my life depended on it, such as a duty weapon.

Wes had a rifle done at W.E. Birdsong a Remy Milspec 5-R 308, maybe more then one, not sure. He is very happy with it and it sure looks nice in the pics. I would like to have them do one of my rifles some day, I wish the original owner had not passed on. I would guess the Bus. was left in responsible hands..

My gunsmith's name is Wayne York, he's been doing gunsmithing and refinishing/painting most of his life..He is  retired State Police. He's a very good honest man and it takes several months to get your rigs worked on because he's so busy. No sure how powdercoating a rifle would turn out, I think it would add to much weight.

Walter Birdsong does  Green T, Black T, Brown T, Tan T and the green is rather an olive traditional military green.  They will also do multiple colors like this Socom that has some black and tan. The brown is extremely dark close to black.  The advantage of this finish is that it makes the rifle virtually rust proof FOREVER.

This is the green and it is very much an old army color of green.

The problem with powder coating is that it doesn't have any "lubricity" so  it can't be used on a bolt if you want it to slide and certainly can't be used on an autoloader. I guess powder coating would work fine if you just wanted to change the exterior color of a gun. The success of Black-T is not just the finish itself but the way it is applied to small parts so that they function 100%. I have heard reports from folks on other forums say that their bolts wouldn't slide as smoothly as they did prior to coating (with Cerakote) and I don't know if that was the fault of the person who applied the Cerakote. I am aware that the original owner of Birdsong, Walter, passed away several months ago, but from what I understand, one's of Walter's son's was basically running the business toward the end and Walter was doing alot of the phone communications with customers. Walter was a gentlemen and a fun guy to talk to with a great sense of humor. If it seems like I'm trying to sell Black-T, I'm not. Their customer base speaks for itself.

Not sure if you want to power coat your rifle. Unless power coating technology's changed... from previous experience "baked on" powder coating is extremely durable but not the thin layer coating that you probably want for your AR. It's excellent for car/truck parts, etc.

It is pretty thick, I had a bunch of my bronco parts powder coated.  It is dang durable though.

I really like the looks of that predator outfit from Tennessee. That is some damn sharp camo patterning.

Good lord, did they powder coat them so thick it was a solid chunk the size of the rim?  I didn't notice it added much weight to my stuff.  I had all my brake drums coated.

My 6.5/284 is done with the Duracoat. I havent had any issues with it at all. Actually has held up well with being tossed around and not scratching and chipping.
