You pretty much get what you pay for. "all will be better than the naked eye, but you also need to take into consideration that with the lesser scopes, you often get stuff that will not hold zero, doesn't adjust properly, and changes point of impact through the magnification range ie the cross hairs change location moving from low setting to higher settings"

There are some decent budget scopes out there, but of the brands you mention, scratch off BSA, and Barska. Add Hawke and Konus.

What is the most you can spend on this?

I'd go this route.

It's 5 bucks over your target, but comes with rings. The glass is decent and it's a no-frills, less to go wrong fixed power. You can spend less, but you'll get a lot more scope for the dollar with this one.

I'd use iron sites if thats all i could spend on optics, you'll probably be able to see more with them thatn through the quality of scope you can get for that.

This summer I shot two rifles that had cheap 4x scopes on them. One was a Bushnell and one was a Simmons. Both scopes were purchased within the last year or two, and I'm sure neither one cost over $50. They were surprisingly good scopes.

rimfire scopes will be set for shorter distanc parallax than other rifle scopes so if you have a scope that does not have parallax adjustment you need to consider this. I would probably use the Weaver rimfire scope and if you save a few bucks on the scope you use the most did you really do yourself a favor.

More than any other component of a shooting system, when considering the optical component, you get what you pay for.

Yep - if you can get to $100, you're definitely into serviceable glass.

I own a Vortex 4x32 Crossfire Rimfire, and a ProStaff 4x32 Rimfire, and they're optically about as close to one another as you can get.  The Nikon is a touch lighter & more compact, but either one of them give a view that's far beyond their price.

I suppose I'm spoiled to the point where I wouldn't be happy with less than the view I get through those, so I'd set my floor at $100.

Only you can decide what "better" means for you.

I only hunt pocket gophers, usually under 50 yards.  Fixed works fine for me.  Of course, I don't cry (or go hungry) if I miss one.  My rifle likes the cheap 40 grain lrn Federal Champion Target ammo, and I'm not obsessed about accuracy, though it does shoot quite well.

Mainly I just practice offhand shooting with my rimfire, and it's just about the same size & weight of my centerfires.  Since those wear fixed 4x's, I'm quite happy that my rimfire is scoped likewise.
