Hey everyone, I am new to the forum and new to long range shooting. I am looking for a new scope for my remington 700 22-250. The gun will primarily be used to shoot coyotes and prairie dogs. Looking for a scope that will be capable of taking dogs out to 700 or 800 yards.(not saying my shooting ability will follow through, but still wanna play around with long shots) I am looking to stay in the 500-600 range and was looking at a Weaver Super Slam 4-20 scope. Few questions for all of you....

Does the turret on this scope have enough adjustment to crank it out to 800 yards while holding dead on? Shooting a 50 grain bullet so its relatively flat. How far will this scope adjust?

Can get a 1 inch tube or a 30mm. What will be the benefits to the 30? More adjustment with the turrets like I'm talking about above? Are they brighter?

Looking to possibly get the ebx reticle for possible quick shots on coyotes at long range. Looks like the marks will line up well, but also considering the illuminated reticle....how are the illuminated reticles on these scopes? Illuminated would be nice for coyotes at dark, but looking to shoot prairie dogs during the day, will the illuminated reticle not work very well for that?

Lastly, looking to possibly purchase from competitor....any good or bad experiences I should know about? Good place to buy or not, the price is right.

Thanks for any advice you can give, know this scope isn't the worst or best, but its what I can afford.

Noticed it won't post the website I was mentioning in the last question so disregard that one.

Happens all the time.  I can't help you on your Weaver question.  I haven't had my hands on a Weaver in quite a while.  It all gets fuzzy after a while.  It's been a slow day so far, but someone will be around soon to answer your questions.

Good to have you aboard...

Hi Rackman - the SuperSlam 4-20x50 is a 30mm scope with a First Focal Plane reticle (I, and many here, like FFP). 30mm tubes do not give you any more light but typically provide more adjustment range.

However, the Super Slam 4-20 only appears to have 34 moa of adjustment range in elevation - at least that's what my notes say - seems very, very low for a scope with large magnification. This is the reason why I quickly disqualified it for my needs. The 3-15x42 only has 50 moa, so it is entirely possible that the 4-20 may have on 34 - but to be sure you should call Weaver Optics and find out directly - maybe the info is incorrect?

If, however, it truly is 34 moa adjustment range, imho this makes the scope unsuitable to applications at long range, unless you purely dead hold without dialing in your corrections. AS for me, I typically do a combination of both to save time. Dialing in is the best method, but it takes longer, so a combination of the 2 works for me.

Another thing to consider: this scope is quite heavy (abt 25 oz), making it unsuitable for hunting purposes for what I do. You may want to consider weight issues if you will be hunting at all with it.

In terms of quality: the 3-15 got very good reviews on snipershide, as value for the money. The 4-20 is significantly more expensive. Imho you could find better value for the money - but that's me.

Finally - where you buy - I have been extremely satisfied with SWFA. If you find cheaper (advertised) anywhere, call them and they will give you a 10% discount on the price you found - so you win on price too.

No fan boy - just reporting my experience with them :-)

Hey, Rackman: I have a 20X Super Sniper on my Remington .22-250. Works well, but a tad heavy on an already-heavy rifle (SPSS Varmint). No problem at closer ranges if needed because you can dial the parallax down to 10 yards with the neat rear focus. For a little better glass and not much more $ (about the same price if you don't mind a FCH-dot reticle) you can get a Vortex Viper 6-20X 44 SF (30mm tube). I looked at those Weaver/Nitrexes and there were just too many questions, not the least being the heavy weight of the 4-20X. Another option might be a Nikon Monarch 5-20X 44; a 1'', 18 oz. scope that comes with 2 extra sets of turret caps, flip-up lens caps and a sunshade.

Thanks for the info so far. I can get a 4-20 for a little over 500 with the weaver so the price isn't much more than the 3-15. Just want to know more about the adjustment for elevation with the turret on this scope to see if it will work for me. Anyone have this scope and actually know for sure what the elevation adjustments are like? The amount stated online seems like a lot but others have different numbers so I don't know. Thanks for the info.
Oh and this is on a heavy barrel gun so I'm not worried about the weight of the scope.

Actual adjustment range varies somewhat across scopes of same model. The manufacturer's spec provides a minimal number that's guaranteed across all. Example: my scope might have 77 moa, my neighbor's 73, and the spec call for 72 minimum. To be sure, you'd have to call Weaver.

Weaver site lists 272 clicks for the 4-20, with clicks being 1/8 moa = 34 moa total, very low. But that could be a mistake.

FYI - the 3-15 can be had for $300 right now.

"FYI - the 3-15 can be had for $300 right now."???

What 3-15 can be had for $300? Not a Weaver.

I have 3 New Weaver Tactical 3-15x50 FFP Mil Dot 30mm. Optically it’s the clearest or as clear as any scope I have owned, shot or looked through (Leupold, Zeiss, Nightforce, Kahles, Swaro). I have one on a Remington 700 Varmint 26" heavy barrel and on a Sako 300WSM which is my main hunting rifle. Don’t have a gun for the other one.

They also have 4+" Eye relief, 60" of adjustment at 100yrds and weighs 27oz. Great Scope!

You can buy a Nitrex scope in 3x15x42 for around 300.00 by looking on the web. They,re a great scope  for that price. I bought several and another Nitrex in 4x20x50. I owned many ..many scopes over my many years of hunting and PD shooting and these scopes are a fantastic buy. They,re the same scope as Weaver,s super slam series.
Last year I bought one Viper Vortex 6x20x50 and can see there,s some glass distortion at the very edges on higher power..not so with these Weaver-Nitrex scopes....and ya..they,re alittle heavy but I,ll take the weight because I know these scopes are buildt tuff enough for my hunting conditions.

Another comparison I made this year deer hunting at dawn and dusk was ...I have a 30 year old Karl Kahles 2.2x9x42 scope on a .260 Remington and a year old 2.5x10x50 Weaver super slam with a luminated no. 4 reticle.... to make the story short the Weaver,s glass picks up objects in low light conditions just as well as the 30 year old top shelf european Kahles scope I have. Of course I attribute this due to the advancement in optical glass over the last decade or so.  I, buy the Weaver if thats what your interested in...

Agree with Duster on the Nitrex by Weaver TR2 scopes, have a 3-15x42 and 4-20x50.  Really good Japanese optics in them and adjustments track well in them.  I've followed the comments about the discontinued Nitrex on various guns/hunting websites for about 4 months.  Nitrex buyers have been pleased with their optics and scope features.  Only complaints I've read about them is their weight.....not a scope for a light carry rifle and a couple of gents who bought the one illuminated model Nitrex TR2 said they had a problem with the switch on theirs.   Oh, if you are into really long range shooting, 800/1000 yards for example, not enought elevation adjustment in the pullup target type turrets.  The discontinued Nitrex by Weaver TR2 scopes are less than 1/2 price of their Weaver Super Slam equivalents.  As another poster suggested, you have to do a web search to find them.
