I went out this afternoon since it was a nice sunny day and I wanted to do some zeroing. Towards the end, I was hitting some gongs @ 300 yards and kept seeing water rising and splashing. When I went out there to collect my paper targets I noticed that the gongs sit only 18" above a big puddle. It had to be the spent rounds bouncing off the gongs into the water.

I have had effects like that, only with just the dirt.  If it hadn't been for the sound of the gongs, I would have thought I missed.  Would be cool to see that effect with water.

It could also be the air disturbance of the bullet travelling over the water. We were shooting in a comp a while ago at 200 and 300m targets. The 100m target area was, when lying prone,  just a bit lower then the gongs. Every time a shot passed over it, a puff of dust would rise. At first we thought we were hitting the ground, but the gongs 200 m and 300m out rung solidly.

I was wondering about that, 8. I think when I go up there tomorrow I'll set up video. Should be a giant puddle under them now after two days of heavy rain.

At my range we have 300 yd gongs, but they are on a mountain by a slope, so when you hit the gong it doesn't ring,it sounds like bat hitting a bottle of liquid.

I think 8shots is right. I forgot the camera today but was looking for the effect. It seems to occur instantaneously after the shot and is more of a linear effect than a splash like you'd expect from a bullet dropping into the puddle. Maybe I'll get another chance before it dries up.
