THANK YOU CHRIS FOR ALLOWING ME TO POST THIS!

I've just completed and posted for sale some very specialized software for us long range shooters on the Apple iTunes store. This has been written specifically for the iPad device. Although there are several packages out there that show ballistics for your load, this is the first to my knowledge that allows the mixing and matching of calibers, bullets, bases and SCOPES to help you plan your long range build. Please see the specs below (from my web site):

"Terminal Velocity is THE ballistic component and optics selection package. Included is a stepped ballistic calculator, a vast library of cartridges, bullets and scopes which may be mixed and matched for your perfect rifle system. No other software package allows you to preview your cartridge and scope selections in ballistic detail. Let Terminal Velocity save you money and time!

Terminal Velocity Features:

~ 1100+ cartridges to select from.
~ 2600+ different bullets all pre-selected by caliber.
~ 470+ scope models from 23 manufacturers.
~ Six different bases from Flat base to 30 degrees angled.
~ Zero range selectable from 100 to 500 yards in 50 yard increments.
~ Step by step selection mode for component and optics comparisons.
~ Quick Mode entry for generic or custom evaluations.
~ Stepped ballistic chart from 100 to 2000 yards in 100 yard increments.
~ Scope selections are rated depending on base selected/internal adjustment of scope.
~ Color bar chart comparing your selections:
~ Supersonic distance for your cartridge/bullet/velocity combination.
~ Scope Maximum Adjustment distance.
~ Estimated hunting maximum range for Elk (1250 fpe).
~ Estimated hunting maximum range for Deer (750 fpe).
~ Email capability for you charted results.
~ Energy Rankings for over 100 cartridges.
~ Momentum Rankings or over 100 cartridges.
~ Taylor Knock Out Rankings for over 100 cartridges.
~ Recoil Rankings for over 100 cartridges.
~ Automated WEB search for Cartridge, Bullets and Scopes."

Basically this means you will have a VERY good idea how far you can shoot, as well as the "reach" of your scope before purchasing. All scope and bullets specs have been stored for you, so simply mix and match components until you have found the right rifle system for you. This has been tested on over 10 rifles with excellent results.

At $12.99 this is not a "cheap" iPad application, however it is a very full featured app that will pay for itself several times over on your first rifle build. As with all iPad (and iPhone) apps you would need to purchase through the iTunes store. Simply search for "Terminal Velocity" in the store.

Please see my web site at : http://www.terminalvelocity.biz/ - http://www.terminalvelocity.biz. If the site is a bit slow I apologize, I need to have a chat with my service provider!

I have been an active shooter for over 35 years, and have been programming professionally for 22.

Questions or concerns please email me at longshot264@yahoo.com.

Thank you for your time,

Jeff

I made this a "sticky", at least for a while.  Chris thought it important enough to post, so I figured it should stay at the "top of the heap" for a while.

I like everything I've seen, except the fact that it is an iPad app.  Limited audience for a limited user group.  You have to weigh how many shooters there are who appreciate such an app vs how many of those there are who are willing to go purchase an iPad to use it... Limited from my view...

How hard would it be to make it work on an ipod or iphone?

Kickboxer, you are correct.  Even with over 3 million iPads sold the percent going to shooters would be small.

SVT - I am playing with the idea of making an iPhone version.  I would need to cut down (or eliminate) the graphics a bit.  One sweet thing about iPad is the screen is large enough to present a lot of detail and yet no as large as most laptops.

Love the comments and suggestions!  Keep them coming!

Very cool.

I'm going to have to get me an Ipad.

Brady!  How have you been?   Talk Chris into getting one for the shop.  You can use the program (I've already offered to reemburse my "cut" from Apple) in the shop when people call and ask, "How far will this scope get me?"

I don't know if you have WiFi there, but even my cheapo Linksys wireless router at home works very well with the iPad.  Lowest cost one is $499.00 I believe.

Don't get me wrong here.  I'm a Mac person, I did the original evaluation of Mac vs PC for the Navy and Mac won.  I love Apple products.
However, I would make a Netbook version, which then expands it to pretty much any PC.  What I've seen of you app so far is pretty impressive.  I fully understand the difficulties of supporting multiple OSs, in another life I was a software engineer then M&S PM, but you have a pretty unique product that I think has a lot of potential.  Hire a PC guy...

hehehe...  I wrote PC software for quite a while.  Can you say MFC42.dll????

:)

I'll consider it.  Distribution becomes more difficult as well...  I love the Apple store concept.

No offense taken at all.  All comments welcome!

Actually, you jjust reminded me I needed to do a registry scan... don't have to do that with Mac.

Cornhuskid------AWESOME idea!!! I'm with the others as far as a iphone/ipod App version!!! And my personal opinion is you need a Android version as Droid is spreading like wildfire!!! I have always like the iPhone and Apple products. However I think they are overpriced. Just as an example: To get a Macbook Pro 15", 4Gb RAM, 500GB hard drive with a i5 processor you're over $2 grand! I can get that in a Sony, Toshiba, Dell, etc etc for like $800-900 bucks! And Win 7 isn't half bad! Apple definitely has the "Cool" factor, and I always point out to my wife that 99% of any computer in any movie is a Mac. Wonder what Apple pays for to have that done(subliminal messages)? Off the soap box and thumbs up again---Bboy623

Bboy,

I'm investigating the iPod and iPhone option...  Certainly some options would have to go, but that would make the price less as well.  I'll just have to see if I can get the important stuff to fit on the smaller screen.

Thanks,

Jeff

I wanted to be sure people knew the main "point" of the software...

Out of the sales I've had so far I've received only one negative comment. This application is more of a testing and shopping tool. You can mix and match calibers, bases and scopes to build your rifle system WITHOUT HAVING TO PURCHASE THEM FIRST. I can not tell you how many times I've read "How far can I shoot with this scope?" posts. This app will tell you that as well as let you fine tune your velocity and other components. There are sooooo many variables no software package can be 100% correct. Exact scope height above bore, actual turret movement (compared to advertised), actual base cant, etc... Please note I could have included windage and more finite yardages in the drop chart, but for the purpose of he program it is not required. If enough demand is there it could certainly be added...

Remember - the iPad is not what I would call a "portable" device for field use. It's great for a lot of things, and shopping (OK, dreaming about your rifle build) is certainly one of them.

I hope this has helped everyone understand what the software is meant for.

Thanks again,

Jeff

PS...

I am investigating the possibility of an iPod Touch / iPhone version.  I need to make sure we don't lose too much functionality as the screen is about 30% of the iPads...

Overall, a very cool concept and a lot of useful stuff. I have a Touch so even though I'm close, no cigar. This would be a great thing for an enterprising vendor to buy from you and host for free on their website...hint, hint. But aside from that, there's always the line between wide availability and being able to monetize a product. No question Apple has provided many people the means to do that. I know one person, however, who owns an iPad and while I'm impressed (and used to be a huge Mac fan) I wonder if the Touch will be the last Apple product I ever own. (I have a '98 G3 in the basement...haven't fired it up in three years).

Android is cool but then you've got those bufus @ Oracle suing Google now over Java IP. That could slow adoption down considerably. I really do like the platform though. Silverlight and Windows Phone 7 (a subset of Silverlight) are another possibility but we know how Microsoft has failed to capture a decent share of any mobile device market. I will say that that apps I've written for Silverlight are far more fun than Flash. I love Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4.0! But how do you monetize? And how do you protect your IP. Even obfuscated .NET code can be decompiled and I've seen some Java files decompiled easily.

Anyway, good stuff and I wish you well with it.

Thank you jonoMT...  I am looking at porting to iPod Touch and iPhone, and possibly expanding the line to a real field firing solution for those smaller devices.  I had considered the Visual Studio route (C#) however doing PC installs and the associated headaches are not worth it.  ("I installed this and now Word does not work", etc...)  The web solution looks interesting, but that can get rather expensive as well.  I think the target audience is too small to support the dollars required every year.

Don't give up on a Touch version.  I just need to see how much I would be losing to port it over.

Thank you,

Jeff

If you make a version that does not run on an Apple systems, I'll definitely get one (I don't get Mac interfaces).  Either Windows or Android-based version would work fine for me.

I have not had an easy time with Apple interfaces, so I stay away from them.  My wife has an iPod touch, and my brother has switched to Mac.  However, I am an old style nerd and the way Apple does human interfaces just does not make sense to me.  I will likely get an Android based smartphone fairly soon, so that would be the platform of choice for me.

If that does not work, I may have to give Apple another shot and get an iPhone 4, but not just yet.

Another vote for the app to work on iPhone/iPod Touch.

I won't be buying an iPad anytime soon, for my needs there's no reason to spend that much on one.

I should know by Monday...  I might even post a list of functions the iPod version would support to verify interest...
