I hunt Iowa so I will say that it depends on how you hunt. If you push deer the red dot can be nice. If you still hunt like a bowhunter a traditional 3-9 scope with some magnification can be helpful. There is a huge difference in how the low cost models of red dots do compared to an Aim Point. With the low cost models look through them and keeping the gun in a rest move your head and the red dot point of impact will not be in the same place. The AimPoint will hold the same point of impact regardless where your head is behind the scope. At close range this is not a huge factor but get out a little further and it truely is. If you want a low cost one go to walmart. If on the other hand you want true accuracy at 100yds spend the money and get the Aim Point. Iowa has true trophy bucks and it would be a shame to miss or just wound one over not spending a couple of hundred dollars when there are guys that spend thousands of dollars for deer leases in Texas and don't get the same quality of hunting we have here for free.
