I bought a SS 10X side focus a couple of months ago and love it.  I mounted it on my .308 for long range shooting.  It is great for up to 500 yards but that target still looks small.  I am thinking about getting a 16X for longer distance, but I would also need to use it for hunting from about 100 yards out.  Would this scope work for both purposes?

Thanks for your input.

fixed 16 times is alot.  I doubt that would be acceptable for hunting less than 100 yards good for long range shooting but I think to much  for closer ranges. IMO

I'm a big believer in the fixed 10x.  Marine snipers used it for years, now they use a S&B 3-12.  I've got a 10x on my 308 and have no problems out to 700yds.  I agree with Stork on the close range.  You'll loose some flexibility in multiple range shots.  My suggestion is to practice, practice, practice with the 10x.  Snipers have been making 1000 yd. shots with fixed 10x for a lot of years.  It just takes a lot of practice to learn your scope, elevation & windage adjustments.  I use a mil dot, I won't by a scope without a mil dot.

When considering a scope for hunting, low-light situations must also be considered. A 10x42 S.S. has an exit pupil of 4.2mm, while the 16x42 S.S. has an exit pupil of 2.625mm. With the glass being equal, the larger exit pupil of the 10x is going to allow better shots at low light.

Thanks for the replies, I will probably get another 10X.  What are your thoughts on side focus vs rear focus?  Does it really matter?

I like the side focus. Technically I don't know which is better. I think they are the same. The side focus is a lot easier to adjust for me. I think it's more of a personal preference.

I heard the side focus is more expensive to make. I beleieve it is generally more poperular and people like it the most. They say the rear is the most durable. I like the side better. but it doesnt bother me using the rear.

+1 on the HD

Reat focus for us lefty-tards. Monkey fornicating with a football doing a "reach around" with my right hand while adjusting parallax.
Isn't there less mechanical components with the rear focus?

It's personal preference as far as the side vs rear. If you have never had a side focus get the rear and spend the rest on ammo.
