I am getting ready to purchase several pair of binoculars on a goverment contract. I need the best glass I can get and stay around $250.00 a piece. Does anyone know anything about these Alaskan guide compacts?? Everything I have ever boughten from Cabelas that had their name on it was good quality, just interested if anyone knew who makes these binos

Buy just one and put it through some tests. Cabelas is really good about returns so if they don't pass muster, you haven't lost anything. You can get Zeiss ClassiC compacts (the 8X20s) for around $250 and they are very good. You also could buy the Bushnell Legend compacts for a whole lot less and get really great optical performance.  (Nikon, Pentax, etc. also make the inverted porro prism models, all of which will perform better and cost less than the roof prism offerings.)

Come on, buck the trend.  Spend our tax dollars wisely for once!!!

What if the hokey pokey really is what it's all about?

OK, for any of you who are interested, I went ahead and bought the Alaskan Guide Compacts. Went with the 12x30 because what we are using them for we will have ample resting areas. The glass looks great, very bright and clear. I'm not an optics expert by any means but these are really good glasses. I have had the wonderful opportunity to use Leics before and WOW! Cant afford them but if I could! Anyway, these glasses are not close to that but for the money I think they are exceptional good. Small, light, easy on the eyes and the diopter ring will stay were you set it. (uses clicks lick a scope turrent)IMHO....well worth the money
