Thinking about putting a Vortex Viper 3-9x40 on my AR-10, anyone think its a bad idea or have a better suggestion on a scope that's around the same price point.

That would be a good choice. A Bushnell 4200 http://swfa.com/Bushnell-3-9x40-Elite-4200-Rifle-Scope-P6910.aspx - http://swfa.com/Bushnell-3-9x40-Elite-4200-Rifle-Scope-P6910.aspx or a Sighton Big Sky would also be excellent choices. http://swfa.com/Sightron-3-9x42-SII-Big-Sky-Riflescope-P9158.aspx - http://swfa.com/Sightron-3-9x42-SII-Big-Sky-Riflescope-P9158.aspx THe Bushnell and Sightron have a special weather coating on them that allows them to perform better in wet conditions. That is a big 1 up in my book.
I would get this mount to go with the one you chose. It will give you near perfect height and proper eye relief. http://swfa.com/Burris-AR-PEPR-1-Scope-Mount-P12624.aspx - http://swfa.com/Burris-AR-PEPR-1-Scope-Mount-P12624.aspx
