Variable at Last

Super Sniper (SWFA SS) Tackles the Front Focal Plane Scope Industry

Sniper with AJ Brown Built Remington 7.62 Sniper Rifle

Having reviewed many scopes over the years the author has learned a few things.  It used to be you got what you paid for but these days some expensive scopes break as often or more often as some of the less expensive scopes.  Having been burned by writing an article and then have the scope fail a few weeks later I have started testing anything really new, a year before putting down written words as to how it works.  I know that won’t win any pluses with the scope industry but I hope the scope buyers like it.

With that said I was sent a 3-9 Front Focal Plane SS a year ago to test and evaluate.  When I agreed to do this article I expected a scope of good value but not top of the industry quality.  The Fixed Power Super Snipers have been good scopes for the money but not the same quality as scopes costing four plus times more.  My first impression of the 3-9 SS was the glass was way too good for a scope costing $599.00 at full retail.  It is as clear as most scopes costing $1,200.00 dollars.  The glass is that good.  Not as good as several $3,000.00 scopes but it would be hard to tell them from similar scopes costing $1,200.00.

The clicks where not mushy like some of the prior Fixed Power Super Snipers tend to be.

The MCREES Precision Folding Stock, provided a great platform for the 3-9 SS

The Turrets are set at .10 Mil per click and 5 mils per turn.  This is fairly good but honestly I wish they had gone with a knob that would get to 1000 yards from 100 yard zero in no more than one turn. That requires just over ten mils in a turn.  The clicks are accurate and repeatable.  Using the standard box test the scope performed flawlessly.  Ten mils up, is ten mils up.  Ten Mils right or left is ten mils.  Ten mils down, is ten mils down.  This is something many scope manufactures fail in and every shooter should test their scope to see how it does.  Test it now and every year or so.

The variable feature is new for

I was thinking about waiting for the 2.5x10x50, but I think for the price and features plus the reviews that I've read, I'm going have to go with the 3x9 SS. It will be perfect for a rifle that now needs a good scope.
Since this rifle will be used no further than 600 to 800yds and speed may be a factor, not having to deal with parralax adjustments is a plus.
Now the 5-20x50 is interesting for the same rifle, but only for a specific application.

That is about as positive of a review as I have ever seen Mike write!

Good for the S.S. scope.

I own a SS 3x9 as well and like it alot, its on a 5.56 Bushmaster Predator. I cannot wait till the others (SS) come out as well. Im looking at a new tactical 308 and would love to mount that SS 5-20x50 on there especially if it has a illuminated reticle. That will be alot of fun, I cannot wait........That was really a great review too!

Folks have not been on here in awhile but rest assured my words are heart felt on the 3-9 Super Sniper.  I just ordered another one.  With that said I am running a 10X HD Super Sniper right now that so far is kicking all the other fixed 10X scopes I have used rumps.

I've got both of those scopes and could not agree more.  They kick ass in their respective applications.

I would certainly like to have a 5-20x50 and I currently shoot the existing models and ahve owned most of them, including the new 6x42 which while not in the same league as the 3-9x42 is still quite nice for half the price its a bargain.

Thanks Mike good to have you back.

5-20 is my favorite 4x erector as well. Great write up. Makes all the waiting that was incurred worth it. Big thumbs up for SWFA for sticking to their guns, and getting it right, before selling them.

The 5-20 has my hands shaking. Cant wait.  The world needs a GOOD 5-20 Scope at a price those of us not of rich man stock can afford.

I agree; the 5-20 will be a big hit.  The utility of a 4.5-14 and the top end of a 6.5-20 in one makes good use of the 4:1 zoom ratio.

I am with you on that Jon.  I am testing a Vortex Razor 5-20x50 right now and I like the magnification range.  It is a good fit for a mid/long range precision rifle.

At the beginning of this thread the OP - Mike eluded to a 2.5 x 10 illuminated SS scope.

Could someone confirm of deny that this is in the works for 2011?  SWFA leads us to believe that there were/are new things in store for 2011....... was the new 1x4 scope it, or is there more?

I called them earlier today and asked about the 2.5x10x42 and they didn't know what I was talking about. I told him I saw a post on SH that referred to 3 new scopes coming out and two of the three have been released (1x4 and 5x20) but not the 2.5x10.

I guess someone had a wet dream because he said it wasn't happening. Too bad, I was interested in getting one of them.

Chris has hinted that he has plans to continue to bring out new models.  Just give it time and I am sure we will continue to see new power ranges and new features.

I highly doubt all his employees are in the loop on the SS scope details.

I would venture that only Chris is full aware of the next scope in his pipeline of awesome optics!

Maybe so. But the guy I talked to (don't remember his name) went and asked someone else before he answered me. I hope your right, it looks like it would be a nice setup. Even if it does happen it would not appear to be any time soon. Unless someone out there has inside info to the contrary.

They just released the 1-4 not to long ago, now the 5-20 is gonna be out within the month if the customs people quite fondlign them.  Who knows what the next 6months will hold, give it time and know that whatever Chris conjures up will be an unbeliveable deal and scope.
