A few months ago, I logged on to this forum and was seeking advice concerning the purchase of a durable rifle scope for my 50 cal.  Many of you suggested that I consider the SS line of scopes from SWFA.  I did considerable research, looking at Night-Force, Leupold, Valdada and a couple of others.  After all the comparison, I went with a 16X SS scope from SWFA.
First of all, the price difference between the SS scope and the others was enormous.   I was somewhat concerned with that, but I figure that if the SS scope didn't work out, I wouldn't be out that much money and I could consider the experience as part of my continuing education in rifle scopes.
To my amazement, the SS scope has performed very well.  And if you consider the cost of only $300. 00  for the SS scope compared to the other scopes that range from $1000.00 to $2000.00, the SS scope is phenomenal.
At the range, I was shooting with several other people who shot with 50 cals.  They had mostly Night-force and Valdadas.  I don't think they believed I only paid what I did for the SS scope mainly because they were so impressed with the performance and optics of the SS scope.  Since then, we have shot together several times with our 50 cals, and they keep telling me how amazed they are with the SS scope.
I realize that there are some areas that the SS scope falls a little short of when comparing it to the other more expensive scopes.  But if you consider the price difference and the fact that the SS scope meets the needs of the 50 cal, then in my opinion the SS scope is a real bargain.
Lastly, I would like to thank  all of you on the forum who took the time to explain and help me find the right scope.

Glad to hear that it is working for you! I really am impressed with the 10x I have on my .300 WSM. It has taken a beating from some less than stellar rings, and kept on ticking!

If it is tourist season, why can't we shoot them?

I've been considering one I'm just not sure I want a fixed 10 power. For targets I know I'd like it but for hunting I don't think it would be practical. This has led me to consider the 3x9x42 one but then I kind of want more than 9x power on the top end. I see several others like the Bushnell 6500 offer scopes with higher magnification for a similar price. That makes the choice so much harder.

Hi Slowrider.  When I first looked into buying a scope I was convinced that I too needed a high power scope because I was going to shoot at long distances....600 yards plus.  Many on the forum said that a ten power scope was good enough.  They cited several good reasons for this, one I remember was that above ten power you can get a heat mirage, especially at longer distances.  They were right.  I still opted for the 16x.  I now realize I really only needed a ten power scope.   In my opinion, the variable scope you spoke of up to 9X would be sufficient for almost any hunting application.   And at the price and performance, the SS scope is a real value.
