I had a  scope put on a gun theother day and was told that they bore sighted it.  They had a inside 50 yd range so I could shoot it right there.  I tried it first at 30 yds and was 5" high and 16" to the right.  I was able to bring it back and got it sited right on but do you think that it was actually bore sighted?   This was the first time dealing with this so called smith and I jut wonder because the last few times I had a gun bore sighted it was pretty close.

I have found the bore sighting services offered in my area to be rather hit and miss.  I've had better results doing it myself.

Accurate bore sighting depends on both the quality of the equipment used and the ability of the person using it.  Even the most advanced bore sighting gear and the most talented user will not get you dead on every time, too many other factors.  But I would expect to be a little closer than 16".

That being said, it's tough to judge someone by the results of just one job.  If you had more than one done and they were way off like that, then I would defininitely suspect a problem.

They just half assed it IMHO........I do alot of bore sighting for people and it can be time consuming to do it right.

I've taken to doing all the mounting myself because I now have some of the tools for torquing the screws per the manufacturers' instructions, but even if I didn't I've never seen an employee in a store do it really well. I like my ring tops with exactly the same gap on either side. But even if it is really done right I don't think boresighting tools are all that capable. Also, there's no way a boresighter can compensate for the unique characteristics of ammo or barrels. For example, I used to have a Swiss K-31 - highly accurate gun - that I zeroed with Swiss surplus. But using Prvi SPs it shot 2" right and 1" higher...still grouped well, but not in the same place. I could understand the vertical difference, given velocity differences, but scratched my head over the horizontal displacement.

I've had good luck removing the bolt, looking down the bore and visually aligning it with something like the peak of a roof 50 yards away. Then (without jostling the rifle) adjusting the turrets until the sight was lined up on that distant point.

Jono you brought up a good point that  bothers me both sides are not very close in the gaps.  The right has 1/8 gap  the other is flush.    I didn't notice it till I cleaned it later in the day.  I feel like getting my money back.  You hate to start stuff but it seems so hard to got a job done the right way for what you paid for it.  A month ago at a different gun shop I ordered a kick ezzes recoild pad for my Sako rifle.  It was longer than te old pad. I wanted to keep the same lenght of the stock so you could see it would have to be cut.  The guy says no problem.  I go and pick it up and it snags and catches my under arm when I drew it up.  I could tell then it wasn't cut.  All I had on was a shirt so I knew it had to be too long.  The guy says oh I cut it I guess it needs more.  If he would have measured and cut the first time it wouldn't have to be done again.  I hate to sound real fussy but I paid for it to be right and it seems quality work is hard to come by even though you pay the top price.  I just had to "VENT"
