Thanks everyone who helped with advise for new scope for  30/06 for my pig hunt in Oct.Went to the local gun store to look through some scopes, what a eye opener. They seem to be pushing Leaupold big time, more leaupys then any other brand.Remembering Ilya's comment"Varix 11 is equal in price but not in performance"I decided to look for myself. They did not have any Bushnell 4200 Elites at all only 3200 series. So compared a Varix11 3x9x40,Bushnell 3200 3x9x40,Nikon 3x9x40 Monarch. To my 57 year old eyes the 3200 was way brighter and  clearer. All scopes were set 3x and aimed at some deer mounts about 200' away, holy crap what have I been missing looking through my 4X leaupy?Anyways I'am not bashing Leaupld just making my own observations. Now if I could find a Vortex dealer in No.Ca. bay area.Leaning towards 4200 Elite at this point,by the way the store wanted 279.00 for the 3200 3x9x40 Firefly.Makes me apprecieate swfa that much more. Thanks again swafa and everyone on O.T.

I agree.  Whole lot of info to educate your mind and separate dollars from the wallet.

Like riding sport bikes when it comes to suspensions and brakes.  Everybody worries about HP however 'the best you have ridden is all you know'.  Don't screw up and ride something really sorted out and smooth cause you will feel the need to upgrade.

Start reading on here and all of the sudden the Simmons Aetec that you were so proud of is back in the box because you WILL go look through something better then you are SCREWED.  At least you can see at the dawns early light, fog, and dusk so much better.  In the good old days before OT you thought everything was invisible.

The fog situation is the gospel truth.  New pair of 10 x 56 Nikon ATB's (300.00 or so) and my 8 x 43 Zen Ray ED's (400 a year ago).  A friend couldn't see what I was describing on a dawn deer hunt in the fog.  Switched binos and his old eyes and unbiased (neither binos were his) opinion was that the ED's were amazingly better.

To summarize I would still be using 100.00 Bushnell Porros if I hadn't read so much about optics on here.  Before I get attacked I have three Nikon Monarch 6x42's scopes.  I am not brand bashing.  Back to that best you know is the best you have ridden.

The 4200 is a very nice scope. If you are hunting low light I would suggest Trijicon Accupoint scopes.

I didn't recommend a scope because I am hard programmed for a SS right now unless a Vortex PST changes my mind.  My bias would have sent you to a SS 3x9.  I have read too much about the SS NOT to try one.  My problem is I really want the 10 HD and that is a few dollars more than my Grendel build can stand which puts me about at the PST at 849.

Conquest 3x9 to the Grendel.  SS to the Savage 308 but then what do I do with the 6x42 Nikon?  I tell you the OT is a bitch in a good way.
