Gentlemen, long time no see Smile

Two years ago I bought a Zeiss Victory 3-12x56 with the # 40 illuminated reticle
The scope is primarly used for red deer hunting from high seats or stands in low light conditions.
Eighter dusk or dawn, or moonlit nights over snow or frost cowerd fields.
The scope sits on my Ruger M77 in 35 Whelen, and I use 250 grn Woodleigh RN in this rifle.

So far I have shot 6 red deers, two roe deer and two foxes with this set up.
Not a lot to make any statistics of, but to be able to harvest these deers I have spent a lot of time out in the fields.

Only one deer was taken in what I will call daylight, the rest in pretty low light and three of them around midnight in moonlight over snow cowerd fields.

This scope is amazingly clear, with superb color retention and with my aging eyes (I´m 64 years) I had no problem to say if the deers was a doe, a spike buck, a calf or a big buck.
To be able to identify the game is paramount as our deer licence say what sex and age that can be taken.
That is one of the reasons I bought this scope, to be able to identify the game in a sertain way.

The deers appear on the fields as black silhuettes seen by the naked eye.
Trough the scope they get colour, shape, I can see if they got antlers (big or small) , I can see the difference in size, se what angle they stand in and so on.
When I crank the scope up to 12 and with a steady rest from the high seats, a good shot usually flatten them there and then.

This is not a report about technical issues, exit pupils and so, just a few words to prise what for me is the ultimate scope for this special kind of deer hunting.

Hard to beat a Zeiss Victory series scope for any hunting application, and having an illuminated reticle is invaluable for night hunting!

I have the same scope on a GAP non-typical hunter in 300WM.  It is an amazing scope.

Sam.
These are red deer does.
The most common deer here in Norway.
In addition we have moose and roe deer.
Also a small population of fallow deer, former park animals, that is not hunted.

That's great and thanks for the report with pictures. It's good to see you still around Arild.
I remember you were using the Whelen and was kind of impressed. I didn't expect to see one in Norway.

Thank you Doug.
Been a while, but you guys are still on my favorite list Wink
Yes, the old M77 paddle and 35 Whelen / 250 grn Woodleigs works great.
This has become my "go to rifle" when hunting red deer.
Range will seldom pass 130 yards and they are usually feeding, totally unaware that  this old man are on the war path Big Grin

They usually fell where they stand, but a few has managed to run up to 50 yards before toppling over.
Anyway, this scope has enabeled me to extend my hunting hours in a way that I thought not possible.
