Subject: Scope Suggestions for Ruger No. 1A

I'm looking at a new Ruger No. 1A in .30-06. Trying to figure out what to scope it with. The rifle will be a general hunting rifle mostly for mule deer. Since the rifle has open sights, I'll be using Warne quick detatch rings and retain the irons for backup.

With it being a relatively light profile short rifle, I want to keep the scope size reasonable. I'm thinking of a Nikon Monarch in 2.5-10x42. I thought about the Leupold Vari X3 in 2.5-8x, but I'm worried that the shortness of the scope may be a PITA to mount and get the proper eye relief on a No. 1. Thoughts and suggestions welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Nikon Team Primos. Bushnell 4200 elite. Sightron SII, or SI. Vortex Viper. Any of these are excellent value choices, and will serve extremely well.

I do not think that you will have a whole lot of mounting issues with the No1, so the 2.5-8x36 Leupold is a very good choice.  It is a nice and trim scope that would fit very well you trim and light rifle.  Besides, 7x or 8x top end magnification is a pretty good way to go.  It is enough for most needs.

I wrote a piece on tweener scopes a while back, and the Leupold is one of the better ones available.  You can read the whole thing http://opticsthoughts.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=31:tweener-scopes&catid=12:riflescopes-random-musings&Itemid=4 - here , if you want, but in a nutshell I would recommend you look either at the aforementioned Leupold:

or at Vortex Viper 2-7x32, which is a fair bit cheaper and performs very nicely:

The excellent Zeiss Conquest 2.5-8x32 has been discontinued wince I wrote that piece.

I'm not sure of what you want to spend, but a Swaro 3-9x36 AV/Z3 would be fantastic.

Depending on what scope you choose, you may need an offset type ring (at least in the rear). I had a Bushy Elite 4200 3-9 X 40 on mine and it worked fine.

From reviews I have read, and only looking through one. I'd say go for it.

What about it?

I have a Nikon Monarch 4-12X40 on my Ruger #1B 300WM and it works fine with the stock rings, but just barely.

In your article, you rate the SII 2.5-10x32 higher than the VXII 2-7x33.  Was this because the SII had a greater variable power range or did you think the glass was better or a combination of the 2?  How do you rate SII glass to VXII glass?

A little of both.  VX-II has longer and more flexible eye relief, but SII has a bit more magnification range and slightly better glass.
