So I recently acquired a CZ550 varmint in .308.  It comes with the rather high CZ scope rings, which means a scope over 40mm will mount up just fine on it.  I wanted to get one of the Vortex Crossfire 6-24's that are on sale, but they're back-ordered until April.  So, I shopped around and I'm thinking one of the two scopes listed in the thread title would be a good fit.  The Hawke is obviously cheaper, is supposed to be decent glass, and has the option for a mil-dot reticle.  The Pentax, however, is significantly discounted from when they used to be $280, and it's an even better buy if it's comparable to a Fullfield II the runs $350.  It also has AO and a bit more magnification.  I'm thinking it may be better glass, too?

So, any input?  I can't/won't be hunting for anything except coyotes/groundhogs/vermin with this rifle.  I'll honestly probably only get it out rarely to punch paper and possibly an occasional coyote.

How about a Zeiss Conquest?

Well, if you mean a 4.5-14 Conquest, there's no way in hell I could justify that much money on a scope.  If you mean a 3-9x40 Conquest, I'm not interested.

Thanks for the input, but I'd really like some info on the two scopes listed.  Both of them are affordable, and seem to be two of the best deals going that would suit my needs.  If someone could just offer some information on the optical quality of those two scopes/product lines, that would be awesome.

Generally speaking, I would recommend going with optical quality over size and magnification.

In the segment you are looking at, I would strongly recommend you look at one of Vortex Diamondback models.  They offer a lot for the money:

Between Pentax Pioneer II and Burris Fullfield II, there are a few things to consider.  They started out as being the same scope with different labels and made in the Phillipines.  Recently Pentax moved the production of their Pioneer scopes to China.  I have no idea whether the quality has remained the same since I have not spent any real time with the Chinese-made Pioneer.

As far as FFII goes, it is a decent scope, but it is not worth $350, IMO.

That's the thing- I don't want to spend $350.  One of the scopes I mentioned is $100, and the other is originally a $280 scope that I can get for $160.  Thanks guys, for trying to help though.  It's nice to get some info on the comparison between the Pioneer and Fullfield.

Sorry your not interested Mr. Miller. I was not trying to lead you astray. I do not work for Zeiss or SWFA and in no way am associated with either except as a customer of SWFA and a forum member. I have just joined the forum recently but am an avid sportsman and have actually been here for a couple years researching some build up projects.  I IMO do believe that the 3-9 conquest ZEISS offers more resolution on a 9 power setting than either of the scopes you listed. I  feel like I recommended an exceptional at the moment quality buy to you. GOOD LUCK!!

Jason, I don't know anything about the Hawke, but I have two Pioneers--a 3x9 and a 4.5x14--and several Fullfield II's. I think they are a great scope for the money. JB did some comparison testing on several scopes and had good things to say about the Fullfield II. I have the 4.5x14 on the most accurate
rifle I own. The gun will shoot 0's every now and then for three shots, and I never have to worry about the POI changing and it is very bright. I don't own the high end Euro glass, but have Leupolds, Nikon Monarchs and other top brands and the Pioneer will hold its own with anything in my stable. As you know, Burris makes the Pentax. I hope this helps.
