i dont know if this where this thread belongs but here goes. when using a variable power mil dot  scope what power should u sit the power on for range easement????

That depends upon the scope.  It should say in the instruction book or sometimes on the mag dial they have a mark or a bump that lets you know what power the mildots are true at.

an older (6yrs) Nikon buckmaster is the scope, and looks like on the 12 power its says 12mil

I would guess that would be it then.  You can and should test it by putting a chart out at 100 yards with marks with the exact same spacing as the mils and know for sure.
