I need help on fitting scopes onto my Sako grey wolf. As you know the Sako has grooves on them for the rings to fit on. The front is tapered. It starts out small and gets bigger. Most scope only has 5.5 inches to work with. The way the rings fit on my gun, it takes 5.75 inches for rings to hold tight on my gun. How can I solve this problem so I can fit scopes on to my gun that has only 5.5 inches to work with?

Hi, try to find a dealer with Sako Optilock extended bases. This, I think, will solve your problem.

Leupold used to have Sako dovetail scope bases. They are excellent and very strong.
Check there website for product list.

One word... Talley.

I have Talley "Fixed" rings with their Sako bases on 2 Sakos.  Outside spacing between rings on my long action Sako is only 5.025."

Incidentally, the Sako Optilock mounts suck, IMO.  Way too high, way too expensive, the bases are a poor design, and the screws were soft on the 2 sets I had.  I ditched them in favor of Talley.  I do like the fact they have the ring inserts, but that's the only thing I like about them.

+1 to Ted's comments. As a matter of fact, I put the Talley's on my 75 because of Ted's recommendations. Anybody need some Optilocks cheap? LOL. Excellent

My Optilock nylon insert broke and Beretta hasn't had any replacements in stock for 6 months now.  $170 for an overly heavy and high set of rings that broke.  JUNK!  Talley makes the best rings for Sako's IMO.

Is the machined base on an older (1972) L 61R Finnbear the same as the later Sakos like the 75 or 85? My sako came with low rings and a 40 MM scope still hits the barrel. I need to find Med or High rings.

Talley, no question, great stuff.

Toss the original rings.

Spooky!  I just got my replacement nylon insert from Beretta in the mail today.  I should gripe here more often.
