I have been hunting, and then extremely busy with work for the last couple weeks.  On September 20th, Hillsboro Aviation lost a helicopter and two pilots.  It was a training accident while practicing autorotations.  I knew the instructor.  Had many hours in that very helicopter, and practice autos myself many times over that very field.

Please be praying for their families.  The memorial is tomorrow.  I wish I could make it.  The instructor left behind a wife and baby.  I did not know the student.

I have a special place in my heart for all aviators.  Prayers are with them.  I am terribly sorry, Drew, that you lost your friend.  If I can help in any way, please let me know.

Sorry to hear about the loss Drew. I have many aviator friends and some are rotorheads. I know how you feel, and it's not easy. My thoughts and prayers to them, and you.

that really sucks, but at  the same time he died doing something he not only loved, but knew was slightly dangerous.

Thanks everyone.  Been a bit of a rough week.  Went to the funeral of a co-worker last night.  Going to miss him at work.  Then find out this news today, almost two weeks later.

It is a really weird feeling knowing that I flew that helicopter, over that field.  Practice autos like they think they were over that area many times.  Just a shock.  I feel bad for their families.  I would rather be the one in that helicopter and die, knowing that would mean he could still be with his wife and kid.

But I agree that he died doing what he loved.  And in my opinion, there is not a better way to go.  When God takes me home, I hope it is either in my sleep, or doing what I love doing.

I lost a friend who was a member of the Blue Angels in 1999.  He and a new BA pilot augered in preparing for an airshow at Moody in Ga.  He had a wife and 3 children.  I had an A-7 pilot friend, who had a wife and two children, auger in in 1990.  It is never easy, very hard to get over.  Every time I hear a jet, I think of them.  But they were flying...

Sorry to hear that, it is so difficult for the families and most dont understand the attraction of flying or the dangers involved. Some think instructing is easy and it is anything but easy puting a student into situations and letting them work their way out of problems

I am sorry to hear about your friend and his co-pilot. It was a lot like what happened to a family I know here who lost a husband and father (of three) to a mail plane crash a few years ago. The NTSB didn't even notify his wife before releasing the results of their investigation to the press.

I remember that crash.  Very unprofessional.

Duce, you are right about instructing.  It can be very dangerous at time, but also makes a good pilot out of the instructor.  If you can fly and fix and catch mistakes, it makes you a better pilot.
