I have that scope.  It was on a .460 S&W rifle....a thumper.  It's a really nice little scope.  I'd give $175 for it.

I am not a great fan of Leupold, but I had a 2.5x8 on a custom 30-06 and it was one of the nicest scope/rifle combos I have ever had.  I would buy one for $175.00.  Be sure and check it out, first.

The new ones will have better glass so what you really need to ask yourself is would you be better off with the used scope or better off in the long run with something else and a lot of that depends on how you hunt.  The following are the scopes I recommend the most often for hunting use.

It is pretty hard to find a new one for less than $350. I just got a new vxlll for $335 at auction and I am well pleased with my purchase. If I could get a new or even good used vx3 or vxlll I would certainly buy it. The vari-x lll at $175 would still be a good deal but I would hold out for the improved model.

For $175 I'd defineitely pull the trigger on it.  It you decide not to let me know where it is and  I will.

I am sorry, I did not read your post carefully. You clearly said this is a vari-x lll in good condition. This model has been around a long time and Leupold must have made improvements from time to time. If this scope was made within the last 15 years I think it would be worth more than $175. It is a wonderful scope. It is light weight and reliable with good optics and eye relief. At the low setting of 2.6 you have a 37 foot field of view and the high setting of 7.8 should be enough power for long range  big game hunting. Leupold has a  toll free number 1-800-538-7653. They should be able to tell you when this scope was made if you give them the scope number.

I owned that scope and paid $375 back in 1995.I would pass, you can't compare with the newer scopes like the 4200 & Monarch.
