Hello everyone,

I'm planning on mounting either a Leupold VX3 6.5-20x50mm LR or a Sightron S3 6-24x50mm scope on my Rem. model 700SPS 270wsm using Burris's XTR Tactical rings and bases.

My question is about ring hieght, I'd like for the scope to be as close to the barrel as possible but still beable to place whichever type of cover I decide to go with. I really don't want much more than a 1/4" gap is what I'm gettin' at. I saw that the XTR mounts run as follows: Low 1/4", Medium 1/2", & High 3/4" (From top of base to bottom of scope)

I'm sure that I'll need either the Low or Medium rings, I was just wondering if any of you may have possibly done the same installation on the same gun/scope/mounts and can tell me which one I should go with.

Thanks,

SH

Hog, give the folks at SWFA a call in the AM and ask them. I "think" lows will work with that scope, but I'd hate to steer you wrong.
Are you planning on using Butler Creek caps?

Welcome, Salty Hog!  Interesting handle, btw...

Usually, the o.d. of the objective bell of a typical scope is about 6mm larger diameter than the objective lens.  So, a typical 50mm scope will have a 56mm diameter objective bell.  Since both of the scopes you are considering have 30mm main tubes, this means that the objective is 26mm larger in diameter than the main tube, or 13mm per side.  Therefore, assuming your barrel is the same diameter as your receiver (which it isn't) as long as the height from the bottom of the mounts where it mates with the top of the receiver to the bottom of the lower ring saddle is greater than 13mm or 0.512" (13/25.4 = 0.512 inch), your ring/base combination will work.  Alot depends on the step-down from receiver to barrel.  Most likely, on a 700, you will have around 0.05" step-down from the top of the receiver to the straight cylindrical portion of the barrel directly in front of the receiver.

So, the correct ring selection all depends on the thickness of the bases.  Bottom line, if your dimensions are correct, the mediums will definitely work, and the lows will work if the front receiver ring base is at least 1/4" thick.
