If you could only have 3 guns for hunting all of North American game what would they be?  I've got 3 calibers.  A 243 win, 270 win, and a 338 win.  I guess that would cover all of the possible game, but if I had to do it over I would trade the 243 for a 223 rem and the 338 win for a 375 ruger.

Please dont let my wife see this if she thinks I only need three guns I'm in trouble.

Well if you are hunting rather than defending against zombies and the red hoard. You have to have a shotgun for birds and a rimfire for small game

Rem  870 pump 12 ga

Marlin model 70PSS   .22   http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Firearms/SelfLoading/70PSS.asp - http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Firearms/SelfLoading/70PSS.asp  however there is much to be said for a 22 mag or 17 HMR I just dont have either of them right now.

The last gun would have to be a high power rifle.  I hunt most often with my
Encore 50 cal musket due to the laws here so I might have to take that but I'd like to take the .375 H&H barrel with FX3 6x42 for it as is shoots tighter than the 30-06 barrel (or may be its time to upgrade that 3-9 tascoWink).

they arent as accurate though, you aim for an area with that rock thrower. the smoke pole is more precise.

That would do it.  I HAD a Rem 700 Classic in 7mmRM (first new centerfire rifle I ever bought) back in '82. After all these yrs I've found it's the only rifle/cartridge I would have ever needed.

22 Mag., 270 Win. and a 12 Ga. Pump, I would pick the 300 Win. over the 270 if my neck would allow me to shoot it.

Cost and availability of ammo not factored in, I'll take a .17 HMR, .300 Wby, Benelli SBE.
If we factor in ammo cost, and availability, I'll take .22lr, .270 or .300 win, and the Benelli.

A 12 gauge pump (Remington 870 preferred) with light to heavy loads will take care of all your bird shooting.  It will also handle small game about as well as a .22LR, if you use the larger shot sizes.

A rifle in the .308 to .338 range will take care of North American big game nicely.  Go for the .338 if you plan to do brown bear hunting.  Otherwise, the lesser calibers will probably do just as well and be a lot more fun to shoot.

A "varmint/PD"  rifle in the .204, .223, or .22-250 persuasion will round out your battery.  I don't do this type of hunting, so will leave the choice up to those who do.

the lead, which was expensive and difficult to find, could be recovered from the tree trunk or limb, (remember they were shooting lead, no jacket) and melted down and reformed into another bullet.  There was actually very little loss.  Saving pelts was secondary for small creatures like squirrels.

As much as I love the 7mm-08 and .25-06, I have to admit, that would probably be the most flexible trio if one was forced to only own 3 centerfire rifles.

But, I've become so fond of the .204 Ruger lately that I might select it instead of .223 as my go-to varmint cartridge.

AH never thought of that!  Makes good sense.  But you would have to bark at an almost perpendicular angle not to skim the tree and ricochet the bullet.  Since lead was not an issue with me I always tried to shoot at the most oblique angle possible and literally lift the bark from the tree under them.  My bad!

The .300WM is a good one all around for large game and a .22 mag is a way better choice then a .22lr for small game.

As long as  you are not the one paying for the bullets it is  --- there is about a $10 per box difference.  Think of each 22 bullet as a penny and each 22mag bullet as a dime.  You can buy a case of 500  22 s for what you spend on a 50 round box of 22mag. So remember to smile every time you shoot Uncle Sam's ammo those .223 's are about a dollar a round.

.223, 7mmRemMag and 870 12ga.  That would take anything that North America has to offer.  Maybe trade the 7mm Mag for old trusty 30-06 but it would be a close 2nd.

I do not think very highly of birds, so I probably would not need a shotgun.  While the question was presumed to be about long guns, I have been spending more time with revolvers lately, so I'll add one in instead of a shotgun.

22LR rifle, likely Ruger 10/22 owing to quick barrel change capability (I have a fair amount of 60gr SSS Aguila ammo that likes faster twist barrels).

375H&H, simply because I do not have one and want to get it.  It is definitel powerful enough for anything that walks on this continent and can be loaded a bit lighter for targets smaller than King Kong.

6" 357Mag revolver.  I have a S&W L-frame that has a superb trigger and is quite accurate with all sorts of 38 Special and 357Mag loads.  That covers a huge range.
