Hello, and thanks to all.   I am thinking of adding a variable optic to an ar platform and was looking at the SB short dot or the nightforce 1-4.  I am sure the SB is better, but just how much better are the optics?  For those with some trigger time on each or better yet, both.  How do you compare them?  thanks again.

For the money, the Nightforce is a great scope, as is the 2.5-10.

I have no time on the S&B, but either will be great scopes, I'd guess.

At that low a power you won't be able to tell much if any other than the fov is larger in the SB.

I don't think you're asking the right question.  Glass quality differences aside, the big reason to spend the extra money on the S&B is if you want a daylight-visible red dot illumination that will function much like a red dot sight at 1X.  It's a different animal than the illuminated reticle found in the NF.  I suggest deciding if you want/need that before worrying about glass quality.

The NF 1-4 (as well as the other 2 compact NF NXS scopes) has an externally adjustable rheostat, unlike the rest of the NXS line.  The adjustment range provides reticle illumination from a dim level appropriate for low light shooting as well as bright settings for daylight use.    I don't know if the NF illumination intensity range is as broad as S&B or adjusts as bright at the highest setting or not, but it does have settings for daylight use.

The higher magnification NXS's from the 3.5 -15X50 on up have only one illumination setting when you pull out the SF knob and changing settings requires unscrewing the battery cap to access the rheostat with a small screwdriver.

Jon So it functions like an Aimpoint at 1x?

Similar.  It's still a scope so eye placement won't be as forgiving as a red dot, etc, but that's the idea.  The reticle itself doesn't light up but the dot is sort of projected onto it separately and it's bright enough to function as a red dot even in bright sunlight which is what really sets it apart.  Unless NF has increased the brightness of their illumination, you won't notice it much in such conditions even on the brightest setting.

Of course you may not need to; the FC2 reticle for example suit you just fine for the close stuff in whatever you're doing.  I just wanted to make sure you knew about the difference so you could make a good choice.

If you do want daytime-brightness a couple more to look at are the Meopta K-dot and the Trijicon TR-24.  I haven't had the opportunity to line them all up and check them out side by side but the TR-24 with one of the triangle post reticles might do the best impression of the Shortdot for less money.  Of course what the shortdot gives you is that up-close performance in addition to a good reticle for longer ranges.  If the longer stuff is more what you do the NF will do fine with the Mildot.  I really like their new "Velocity" reticle (much like the JP in my ACOG only better) but it doesn't look like it's available in their 1-4 yet.

Anyway, I don't have all the answers but hopefully that gets you pointed in the right direction for further contemplation.

as I have the Nightforce NXS 1-4 I would rate it "ok". If I were to do it over again I would save the extra $1000 and get the S&B.
