I have spent quite a few hours on this and other forums looking for some help with a decision on a new scope for my Ruger M77 Mark II, 7mm-08 Compact. I believe I have narrowed it to three being the Simmons AETEC 2.8-10x44, Bushnell 3-9x40, or the Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40. All of these scopes are in my wifes acceptable price range and I think I am really leaning toward the Simmons. By the way, I am a bit pigeonholed by the rifle being a stainless finish with dark wood laminate so I would prefer a silver scope. As well as it is a very small gun so I cant go crazy on size, and I am somewhat stuck with Rugers mounting rings. My hunt with this rifle will mainly be for mountain use, with a good potential for some long range shots, but I will also use it for some short range at home here in GA.

Thanks,

MTWHunts

The Simmons has excellent eye relief, aspherical optics and matches Ruger's finish well, however its 44mm objective is right at the limit for fitting your rings (no way to tell if it will fit with out trying it).  The Elite has RainGuard coatings, matches almost perfect and will easily fit into the Ruger rings.  The Nikon Buckmaster lacks a little optically does not match the Ruger finish very good but is an overall good scope that will also easily fit.

Based on all the facts and what you require I would say go with the http://www.riflescopes.com/products/323940S/bushnell_elite_3200_3-9x40.htm - Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40 Silver........

Thanks! Being the impatient type I have already gone ahead with the Simmons and it fits perfectly, the Bushmaster is a bit longer which I feel would have been too close to the action. I still have not had a chance to test it in the field as of yet but your response has put me at some ease as to its future performance.

I'd go with the Buckmaster, or the 3200.  I have an Aetec, and it's great scope for the money...but it's not as nice as my Buckmaster.  BTW, I got the 4.5x14x40 model.  I've heard good things about the 3200, but have no personal experience.  Now, the Buckmaster is on LONG scope...it's almost 15"...so if that's a problem, go with the 3200...it's got to be shorter.
