Subject: Cooper Model 52 trigger adjustment anyone ??

Well, wish I could say that I am one of those super proud Cooper owners but it really has been the most problematic rifle I have ever purchased. Now I need to adjust the trigger and have been waiting on a response from Cooper for 2 weeks !! Head Banger

I haven't really had time to shoot any lately but out of the gate the gun had some magazine issues, extractor issues, and I couldn't shoot an inch group at 50 yrds with a cool barrel. They replaced the magazine, re-crowned and thoroughly cleaned the barrel, and replaced the extractor. Seemed to shoot better, magazine is still a little tight going in and out, and seemed to be ejecting shells fine last time I shot it. But the trigger was a little stiff and I bought a trigger pull guage........it's pulling 4.4# from the factory(has a little creep too).

Does anyone know how to adjust the trigger on a Excalibur model 52 or just a regualr 52 ??? Looks like it would adjust like my Sako 75 but I did not want to dive off into something blindly.

Wish I could help but my 52 has been GREAT. I've not had the need to adjust the trigger or do anything else. I hope they (Cooper people) make it right. If the trigger adjustment is like the Sako, it will be a breeze. I set mine to just below 3#. Good luck and please post the outcome.

I have zero experience with the 52 but other Cooper triggers adjust like a 700.  They have keeper screws in the side of the trigger housing that lock the adjusting screws though.  If you take those out put a small piece of plastic in the hole before tightening the keeper screw(small peice of nylon wheedwhacker string).  Otherwise they'll deform the threads of the adjusting screws making fine adjustments more difficult in the future.

I'd be surprised if the 52 didn't use the same trigger as the other Coopers.  If not it's probably very similar.  Cooper will also adjust a trigger free of charge if you ship it to them.

Thanks , I believe your right man. It has a longer screw in front of the trigger similar to my Sako, but I think I remember seeing some on the side as well............will have to check it out again !!

Kinda ticked off at having to send it to them again , but I may !!

Well.......decided to mess with it myself. The bottom front screw adjust pull weight............but you have to loose the set screw on the side. It is a very fine adjustment with probably less than a half turn = 1.5# !! I got it down........but some wierd stuff is happening. It will fire at anywhere "right now" from 2.12 # to 3.3 # on a given pull.......maybe a random 2.9# pull. But the safety is not operating correctly.............it will not work ...........then you bolt it and it works fine but the trigger pull is back down to 3.3 to 4 # !

I suppose I need to send it back but would like to not have to do that ! On another note.......have read these guns should come in at 2.5 # and go to 16oz.............the best I have gotten was 2# 3oz . There is a wierd threshold of where if you go too far out it goes to 4-5# and if you go back in it will go to 4-6 # ! Not sure what to do.............but I am a novice at trigger work ???

You've reached the threshold of what the design will safely allow.  The safety is one main limiting factor on the Cooper trigger.   If you go too far it will cause the knuckle the engages the safety to bind.  I have never safely adjusted a Cooper trigger below 2lbs.  Cooper will put lighter springs in it if you ask them.  They will almost never mail those springs out to the owner because of liability.
Your pull weight is affected by adjusting the engagement screw and the pull weight screw.  Try adjusting the engagment to correct the erratic pull weights.  And by all means be sure to bump fire test it and slam fire test it before shooting it.  I do 5 to 10 of each test.
