Hey,

I need to scope a .22 rifle for short distance shooting -  20 - 50yds.

Which one of these scopes will be better and why:

1. Burris Short Mag (or I guess Timberline too) 2-7x26

OR

An older (30-35 years) Weaver V - 1.5-4.5?

Thanks

Neither will be a great choice because of parallax issues at those ranges. But assuming that you just plan on hunting or plinking and not fine target shooting either will do the job.

Better for what conditions? The Weaver has fine glass but the coatings are dated. Biggest issue I've seen is flare from sunlight. I'm not understanding what application would warrant a scope with much if any magnification at 50 max yards.

The Weaver is paid for.  Unless you are shooting paper for money, the paralax thing gets over blown a lot of times.

There may not be any noticeable parallax at 50 with the Weaver you already have. If you check it, you might be surprised.

I don't own the Weaver but was considering buying it.

I'd need a scope to paper punch AND for squirrel/rabbit shooting.

Funds are limited to $150.

In that case go with one of these.  Still weavers but you will have newer glass and coating and stay within your budget.

It's within budget and is a good scope for a plinker.  I'd take it over either of the other 2.

Are you limited to just those 2?

If you don't already own the Weaver you may as well upgrade to the newer technolgy. I can recommend this:

There are only 2 limits; price and size.

$150 and 11". Whatever it will be, it's going on a 16' barrel and I want to keep it asw compact as possible.

By the way you guys, thanks for the help with this.

With that budget I'd either go with a Weaver RV7 2.5-7x28 rimfire or a fixed Weaver 4x28 rimfire. Both are about ideal for what you want to do and are good quality optics. You want a rimfire scope and not a centerfire scope because a rimfire scope will have minimal parallax issues at the ranges that you're shooting at. As far as parallax being "overblown" that's only true if you don't worry about accuracy. Parallax isn't a big issue at long ranges but it can be at short ranges if you're shooting for tight groups and yes even just for fun.

Edit: If you already own the Burris I'd save money and give it a try. If you don't own either then I would buy a rimfire specific scope.
