hunting deer in ny, is it a bad idea to use a red dot or no magnification optic. i know most hunting here will be short distance but i wasn't sure if not having any magnification would be bad. if not what do you guys think of the trijicon reflex nsn or reflex 2 with amber triangle? 1st time hunter

A red dot scope would be a good choice in heavy cover. They would be most useful on a scout rifle or shotgun used for close range hunting. Would give you a real fast follow up shot on running game for sure.

I think your best bet would be to go with a low power variable - something along the lines of a 1.1x-4x scope (many out there, and Chris can chime in on some wonderful choices he has to offer.)

Keep it at 1x most of the time for quick acquisition shots, but you can crank it up to 4x for longer shots when you have the opportunity.

I have an IOR Valdada 1.1x-4x scope that has a lighted reticle - like it a lot.

I would opt for the lower power variable's as well. More versatile than no magnification sights. You would limit your rifle with a no magnification sight. With a variable you still have the low powers for quick shots. As well as the higher powers for the longer shots. Burris makes a few low power variables with illumination. With an illuminated low power variable, you in effect almost have aimpoint style scope as well as a traditional scope.

hey brady, i'm lusting over the ior 1.1-4 crt but it's a big chunk of change. the burris lrs is much cheaper. would it be a bad move to choose the burris for less money or should i just save up for the ior? is the quality difference huge? for an ar-10 by the way.

I would still go with the Burris. The IOR's are notorious for their poor eye relief. I think you would need more eye relief for your AR. The reticle offered in the Burris is more fitting for your application. Both scopes are durable, and both have goop optics. The IOR may have a slight edge in optics. I don't feel the IOR is worth the extra money compared to the LRS. Wouldn't be a bad choice to go with the Burris.

going with the burris signature safari what are some good quick detach rings . i think the scope needs 1" rings. if not quick detach i'll just re-zero anyway because my other rings for this rifle(different scope) are not qd's.

The http://www.riflescopes.com/departments/206/rifle_scopes/burris_rifle_scopes/burris_lrs_electro-dot_rifle_scopes.htm - Burris Safari has added eye relief and the LRS reticle is tailor made for what you are doing.

The http://www.riflescopes.com/departments/292/rifle_scopes/ior_rifle_scopes/ior_tactical_rifle_scopes.htm - IOR is a tactical scope and was designed and built for military use, the CQB reticle would be of little use for deer.
