I want to get a compact pair of binoculars for watching baseball. Given that we normally sit way out beyond the 3rd base foul post.

I've checked numerous sites and it seems I should be looking for something around 8x40. However, given my location and price bracket I seem only be able to find full size binoculars or compact ones that are too expensive.

Therefore I am trying to work out what the best compromise pair I could get. There are some many magnifications I will write down the ones that seem to occur most frequently:

8x25, 8x21, 8x22
10x21, 10x25,
12x21, 12x25, 12x26
20x21, 20x40
30x40, 30x60

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

First, what's "too expensive"?  I would first take anything over 10X off your list and maybe just look at 6, 7, or 8X, depending on what you want to see.  The only binoculars I ever used at a baseball game were 6X25 Custom Compacts.  You couldn't tell from center field if the batter had shaved or not, but I didn't feel the need for more magnification.

I vote for 6x30 Leupold Yosemite.  Nice bright image, 420' fov.  6x is enough for any sports event for me.  They are big enough for a comfortable hold and small enough to be reasonably unobtrusive.

I've used 10x25's (Leitz). Too light, too much shake. I think your better off going the other way in power, 8x or 6x like suggested above.

For watching (lighted) sporting/theater events I would suggest:

  • Nothing over 8x
  • No objectives over 28mm
  • Buy the best one you can in whatever price bracket you can afford.

a 6x -8x range will fit your need. Don't go over 10x. The one 20x21 you listed will only ruin your perfect game day.

I have an inexpensive pair of 8x25 Bushnell porro compacts that have given me very good service.  I don't think you need to have an expensive pair for this type of use.  Only downside is mine are not waterproof and they have fogged up once in a driving rain so don't use them for hunting.  This might be a consideration.
