Subject: Wish I could do a poll for this

I looked to post a new thread to do a poll, but maybe I don't have enough posts to do that or maybe we can't do them here.  Anyway, it would be interesting if we could do a poll to determine the mix of shooters that we have here and it would shed some light on what aspects of scopes we find the most important such as ultimate clarity, repeatability, reliability, etc.  If I were creating the choices they would probably be the following:

Which describes the majority of your shooting the most:

1.  Hunter shooting caliber larger then 30-06
2.  Hunter shooting caliber 30-06 or smaller
3.  Target shooter shooting caliber larger than 30-06
4.  Target shooter shooting caliber 30-06 or smaller

My point is that target shooters probably don't care how scopes hold up to bumps and falls, .223 shooters have never really tested whether a scope holds a zero and can worry about clarity more than a shooter that has a .338 WM, also target shooters look through their scopes for extended times.  Anyway you get the idea.  We have a mix of shooters and it would be nice to find out what the mix is.  John Barsness obviously looks at scopes as a hunter.  Some of the others look at them in a way more appropriate to target shooting.  It doesn't make either right or wrong, just maybe more suited to their styles of use.

You also have to know what kind of standards someone has for accuracy if you are going to talk to them about holding zero.  Personally I can't stand a rifle that won't shoot 1" if I plan on shooting it beyond 200 yards even though I realize it doesn't have to be quite that accurate to hit the vitals of a deer.  Other guys may be happy with 4" groups at 100.  John mentioned that he had one gun that was always a sub moa shooter and he had a scope that degraded and the groups opened up to 4".  He changed the scope and it went back to normal.  To a guy that was happy with the 4" groups to begin with, he would have never though there was anything wrong in the first place.   Let's be honest, some people just can't shoot anyway.

Anyway we've been talking about evaluating scopes in another thread and there are so many variables for their use and the skill of the shooter along with their vision that factor in, it makes it very hard to accomplish.

Tom

Most of my shooting is related to hunting, I try to shoot all of my hunting rifles at least once a month.  This includes:

1. Remington 700 CDL 7mm08

2. Savage 110 270 (This was the first hunting rifle I purchased for myself.  Even though it is a cheap package rifle, it is more accurate than the Remington)

3. DPMS LR308

This is a hard question to answer, given the choices of answers.  Most of the posters on this site tend to do at least 2 or 3 of the choices.  I can not hunt with high-powered rifles in my state for anything but varmints, but with the recent explosion in the coyote population, I just purchased my first centerfire.  I came to this forum to gain some knowledge on what is required for a good centerfire scope, having no personal experience in this area.  I will be spending a good deal of the time at the range, but with the ultimate goal of success in the field.  Does this make me a 2 or a 4?  My real hunting passion is the global elimination of all things tree rat.  I have lost 2 "lifetime best" caliber bucks to these (several expletives deleted) creatures.  I need to find a decent scope for that purpose, as well.  Does this info put me any closer to 2 or 4?

I like the general idea behind your question.  I think intended purpose weighs heavily on which qualities are paramount.

I guess if the question is "most of your shooting"  as opposed to most time spent at, then I am mostly #3.  Spend far more cartridges on target than actual hunting.

.220 Swift, .243, 30-06, 7mmRemMag, 7mmSTW, .458 Lott.  I've made some rifle trades for house building services and optics over the last few years, don't have as many as I used to.  Use everything for all 4.  I REALLY want a .375 H&H (or Ruger), but right now am trying to stock up on ammo.

Any thing between 223/30-06 which is a large variety, the one that gets used is the one I didn't use the hunt before they take turns cause they all work well.

I've gone crazy and have been stockpiling ammo for my 350 Rem. Mag. I fell in love with this cartridge. With a Libsaver recoil pad on my M77 this thing is a pleasure to shoot, super accurate and oh so deadly on Mr. whitetail!

I target shoot to be a better hunter (and I enjoy the practice). I shoot about 1000 rounds of .22 LR a year, 100 rounds of .308 and 80-160 rounds of .30-06 (through an M1 that I take out once or twice a year and I always go through 10 clips when I do). Last season, I took three game animals and fired five shots. One was an outright miss, another to finish the job. So that's about 250:1 target shooting vs. hunting.

I go 2 and 4.  My deer rifle is a 6.5x55.  I use 223 and 243 on varmints.  Target mostly with 243 and 308.  I don't shoot much when I hunt.  I tell people that I take my gun for a walk.

Mostly 4.  I too use a bow, but main that too is targets in yard.  I really don't get outto hunt much unless it's bird season.  Quail and dove.  I'll wear the barrel out of my beretta long before I'll shoot the barrel out of my remmy.

That pretty much covers it. Except the bow (Hoyt Havoc) which I prefer, but I always cary some iron in case the target wants to stay out of bow range. I prefer hunting but need target time to be confident for the hunt. 444, 270, 22 don't want to list everthing.
