Looking for a compact scope to mount on my DSA FAL carbine. Will be using the DSA mount, and Quick release rings by Leupold. Looking at (2) different copes, first is the Bushnell Elite 3200 3-10x40 at a mere $194.95. Also the Leupold ultralight 3-9x33 looks nice, but quite a bit more at $349.95.
I currently own a 4-16x40 Elite 4200, and absolutely love it, great scope for the money. Problem is there is no compact in the 4200 series, only in the 3200 series. If there was a compact in the 4200 line I would have already ordered it.
The Leupold is slightly smaller and a few ounces lighter but is $150 more. I own an old Vari-X2 3-9, and like it although it is not as bright as the 4200.
I will be shooting out to 300 yards, and want a compact scope as the rifle is not that big, it only has a 16 1/4" barrel. Will be used for informal target shooting. and an occasional deer hunt (with my 5 rd mag of course!)
Anyone have experience with these and is a 3200 that much less in quality than a 4200?

Thanks for your help deciding!

First! I don`t consider a 3-10x40 Elite 3200 to be any kind of a more compact scope. Same holds true with your 4-16x40 4200.

You are getting a little better with the 3-9x33 Leupold Ultralite because it is lighter and smaller, but still for its size, I don`t consider it a compact scope.

Your hunting is going to be out to 300 yards. Unless your hunting varmits, anything more than say a 5x or 6x on deer sized game is really not needed.

For your compact if I were you, I`d spend some more dollars if possible and go with either the 1.5-5x20 Sightron Big Sky or the same magnification in the Leupold VX3. Another good choice would be the VX2 1-4x20.

Now THEY are compact scopes!!!

The fn series of guns have a very low comb, and the carbine is even lower. thus you will need the scope as low as possible to get any kind of fit on the stock.

also you just spent a bunch on a great gun and now your going to put mediocre glass on a dust cover mount held by several small tension bolts, even if it is DSAs,

get something with as small as bell as possible to get as lowas you can and light as possible to stop torque in the questionable base.
why not look at some of the smaller lighter range variables, such as the burris xtr, or a 1x4 or something leo, nikon, burris.

Forgot to mention that I use a 1.5-5x20 VX3 part time on my 300 WSM compact with a 16.5" barrel. For deer and elk sized game to 400-500 yards if necessary, I won`t have a problem. You`re only shooting and hunting at 300 yards max................Those scopes you had in mind are out totally of porportion with that rifle you have.

I have a Sightron S2 2-7x32 compact on my lightweight deer rifle and have made shots out to 300 yards.Plenty of eye relief crystal clear.
