For somebody that shoots smaller targets (like a goose) up to 300 yards, often shoots in bad weather and low light conditions but also likes to go to the range for some precise paper shooting - which one of those three would you choose - and why:

1) Bushnell 4200 6-24x50mm
2) Leupold VXIII 4-15x50mm
3) Zeiss Conquest 4-15x50mm

Yippee

All good choices, reverse your list and you have my answer.

To begin with a goose is a migratory bird and shooting it at 300 yds would get you in trouble - it is a Federal Violation not just a violation of state game laws. So lets say you wanted to shoot a crow at 300 yds. All of the above scopes would work but having target knobs to dial in correction or a reticle like the Leupold varmit reticle would be a significant advantage.  Here is my pick and note that I have come very very close to buying this one myself but  selected a more expensive tactical scope.

10122 Leupold 6.5-20x50 VX-3 http://www.samplelist.com/picture_form.aspx?pic_url=10122_Picture%20051.jpg"> 66575, Matte finish, Fine Duplex reticle, Long Range, Target Knobs, Side Focus, xtended twilight lens system, 100% new 2009 demo model, used for current SWFA.com web pictures $1,022.00 $749.95

Do you really feel the older Bushnell 4200 is superior to the new Leupold VX-3 line?

Guys, Im thinking about buying VX3 I found (used though).

Tell me - is there a difference between the old and the new Leupold VX3?   In what ways?

Also, can you tell me if these scopes have had some reliability issues or work just fine?

Old leupolds work just fine however the improvements in the glass and the coatings and the style of knobs is significant. There are some new discounted VX3 scopes on samplelist.

Good question.  I'm contemplating one of these as well.  I do more bench shooting though.  And my last scope purchased was the 4.5-14 Conquest.  I've found there's a lot of evenly matched scopes in this category.  I can't make up my mind and I already own most of the scopes I'm considering.  That should tell you how tight the competition is.

I'll say this, clarity is nice but I'd bet there isn't a whole lot of difference between the 3 that were listed.  But clarity isn't everything (in my book).  Repeatibility has to be there and equally important is what the scope is being used for.

Here is what I just did.  I took the following scopes and checked for clarity in a crop of trees on the lowest power (figuring in a wooded environment that’s where it would be anyway).  This is probably not a scientific method of determining which on is best but this is the way it appeared to me.  From brightest to darkest;

1.         Zeiss Conquest             4.5-14x50 (SF)

2.         Zeiss Conquest             3.5-10x44

3.         Nikon Monarch              6.5-20x44 (AO)

4          Burris Full Field II           4.5-14x42 (AO)

5.         Leupold VARI X-III         3.5-10x40

6.         Nikon Buckmaster          4.5-14x40 (AO)

Had the Nikon of been in the same power range as the two Zeiss scopes, it would have been interesting.  The Burris FFII was real close to the Nikon.  The Leupold and Buckmaster were quite close but the Leupold was the brighter of the two.  Also, had I put them all on the same power, that may have skewed the results as well.  I'll try that experiment again again and post the results.

Hope this helps
