I'm going to buy Leica Ultravid or Zeiss FL 8X binoculars.  They will be used for hunting and birding.  I would like to get the Leica 8X32's for their size and weight.  Will I be happy with these in low light, or do I need to get 8X42's?  I currently have Pentax 8X43 DCF SP's.

The Leica or Zeiss in 8X32 will outperform the Pentax (I have checked this out at Scope City in CA).  Get the Leica or Zeiss in either 8X32 or 10X42 and you won't be sorry.

I would go with the 42s myself. The size and weight difference is not enough to notice, for me anyways. The Zeiss or Leica binos with a 42mm objective will be much brighter than the 32s in low light conditions.

I think that you are going to be disappointed in the 32 vs what you already have in your SPs.  I think it will be worth the money if you step up to the 42s.

Thanks, ranburr.  I was waiting for your opinion.

I have a pair of 8x32 and 10x42 trinovids and I love them both.  If size is the major concern between Zeiss and Leica, then I would choose a Leica 8x42 Ultravid.  The Ultravids 42mm are significantly smaller than the Zeiss FL 8x42s.  I love the size of the 32mm but the Ultravid 42mms are so compact and light for their performance that I would have to choose them.
