The 50mm objectives of a vintage 7x50 binocular were replaced with 90mm objectives. This resulted in an 18x90 binocular with a 5mm exit pupil and a 2.8degree Tfov.

Aside from the novelty of being able to say you did it and as a conversation starter, what would be the value of this project?

Certainly it's not an economic advantage. This  project supposedly cost ~$300.  You can buy a NIB 20x60 Pentax PCF WP II for under $200.

What if the hokey pokey really is what it's all about?

Lucznik, thank you for your reply it is a welcome response.

The last line of the article asks you to – “Consider, as a next project ….”

(As an example, using the same techniques, a binocular with interchangeable eyepieces sporting 90mm objectives and providing usable magnifications that range from 20x to 70x was fabricated. The cost, less the eyepieces, was not much more than an additional $100.)

Innovation – is what makes a people great. The loss of it certainly makes them less than they could be. Might not innovation be the true value of this project?

It might.  Heck, if the guy doing it just has nothing better to do with his time, that's O.K. too.  I was just curious what (if any) practical value such a project might offer.

Even if it has no practical value, that doesn't make the effort worthless.  After all, most of us who go hunting or fishing would likely find it much more practical to just go pick out some meat from the butcher counter at the local supermarket.

Well said!

I suspect that you as I want to be as independent as possible.

You and I just might just agree that we want to “do it ourselves” and not let others jerk us around.

However, after reading this “Conversion…” article someone may see how to build on the presented techniques and come up with a more than competitive quality binocular. It is my hope that we as a country, once again, regain our competitive edge.
