Well I looked out my window today, and it looked nice outside. I decided to pack up and go to my private range. I get there (about a mile north of town) and have about a 10-12 mph wind to deal with, and it's about 25 degrees. Not bad. By the time I got my targets up, and got set up to shoot it was about 18 degrees, and the wind picked up to 20-23 mph. Ugggghhhh. Any way I tested some 25-06 rounds that a buddy loaded for me and they were too hot. And they shot bad too. About 2". The only up side is I got to see what a .17 hmr will do to a piece of 3/8 hardox AR 400 steel at 406 yds. If you didn't guess, it's not much. took a 1/4" circle of paint off thats about it. I needed 25 moa left wind to hit!!! I only needed 29.5 for elevation. LOL. I'll give it up until the wind slows down a bit.

Easy for you to say. You ever shoot a 17 gr. bullet at 400 yards in a 20+ mph cross wind. IT'S A JOKE!!! I was getting about 1 out of 10 with the gusts.

It kind of upset me when the .25-06 rounds were junk. I shot some out of his gun that would put 3 shots in a dime, with no pressure signs. These would barely put three rounds in the same county, and the primers didn't look too good either. I had to tell him to back them down and start over.

Trigger, maybe it was a good day at the range,  if it were 80 degr. out instead of 18 degr. just think of how hot those 25-06 loads would have been.

This is a good point. At least they guy that loaded them can shoot them. These were loaded to 54 grains to be "safe" he runs his at 57. I don't know how he gets away with it, but my rifle sure didn't like them.

I can't believe you tried to shoot a 17HMR 400yds in a 20mph cross wind and then complained about the results. Just don't tell us you peed into the wind to slow it down, and want to complain about having wet pants.Laugh

It WAS a joke. But if you insist...

Bring it...

Seriously, WHY would you want to shoot in that if you didn't HAVE to?  I guess there is some element of training which can be benefitted from, but sure seems "unfun".  I guess finding out the ammo needed re-loading was worth it, though.  Brrrrrrrrrrr.

Actually the temp didn't bother me, but after the wind picked up, the longer ranges were tougher. After I discovered that the reloaded ammo wasn't too safe, it was about pointless to be out there. I had made a few hits with the .17 at 400 before, and since I was there, I thought "oh what the heck". I stayed until I got a hit, as I wanted to know what the windage was, and then finished that clip, and one more. It could have been a useful session if the '06 ammo worked out.  That is a sweet picture. You paint it? My buddy does airbrush work. I'd like to, but just don't have the patience.

Did you hear the story about a shooter who decided to go shooting on a similar day.  It was blowing 15 to 25 mph and about 30 degrees.  Anyway he packed up all his rifles and gear and pulled out of the driveway and drove down the road a few miles and decided it was just too bad to go shooting.

So he turned around and pulled back into the garage, went back into the house, stripped and climbed into bed and snuggled up to his wife.

He whispered "Do you believe how bad the weather is!?"

And she said "Yeah, and do you believe my stupid husband went shooting in this weather?"

Laugh

See! I avoided what could have been a great tragedy! It was warm in here but the .25-06 ammo would have worked in a pinch.
