I have always wanted to get into long range rifle shooting.  I have been exploring this websight and a few others about this topic.  I saw a AR-30 rifle on gunbroker.com the other day chambered for .338 Lupua.  I am looking to spend not more than $1,500 on a rifle at this time and am looking for one of the larger .30 cal.'s to shoot (.300 win mag).  Should I even consider this rifle or can I do better for what I am looking to spend.  I was wandering if anyone out there knows anything about this rifle.  Is it an accurate rifle (assuming I do my part).  Any input anyone has would be appreciated.  Thank you,

Actually I read an article in Guns & Weapons for LE where they tested the AR-30 in .338 Lapua and some other rifle.  I also have just read an article in a later issue of the same magazine where they tested a Sako TRG-42 in .338 Lapua.

Claims are this round through a good rifle (which the AR-30 is) will hold sub MOA at 1000+ yards.  From what I've heard that round is the best little niche between .308 and .50's.  I'm sure there are others that have shot this caliber that browse this forum who could tell you more.

I have used an FN in 338 Lapua before, it is an excellent long range round / wpn platform. Try and find someone who has a 338 and will let you shoot it before you buy one. The recoil is a little heavy for most.

Thanks for the info on the AR-30.  If anyone else has anything, I would love to hear it.  Another gun that I am interested in is a Remington 700 Sendero.  I do not see this rifle on the Remington's website for 2005.  Have they quit making this gun?  If any one has any opinions on this rifle I would love to hear them.  I was thinking about the .300 win mag or .300 win ultra mag for this one.  It looks like a nice rifle to me, especially for the price ($700-$800).  Once again, Thanks

I have never shot an AR-30. I have shot an Armalite AR-10 (in 7.62) but was not around it long enough to form an accurate opinion. I don't think Remington has dropped the Sendero line. Remington had used the Sendero badge for its long actions and the VS for its short actions. If they did they have probably grouped them under the VS name. The Rem 700 PSS is also an option worth exploring. The PSS is more closely related to the Army version of the M-24. It is available in 300 win mag and 7.62 from the factory. I am currently building a 700 PSS in 300 win mag. I have used the 700 for a very long time. I have carried it in harms way in some very nasty climates. My expierences have found them to be rugged, accurate, and dependable. A good place for aftermarket stuff and to get work done is G & A precision in Kansas City, MO they have a pretty nice web site http://www.gaprecision.net - www.gaprecision.net .

the AR30 in 338 LM is not a very bad recoiling gun, since it has the super effective armalite brake, it about comparable to a regular 308 win. if this is your first LR rifle, do not get a 338. for 1500 you can do alot better in a rifle than the AR30. the 338 will also cost you a arm and a leg to shoot. if you dont reload, you dont want the 300 ultra mag. go with either a 308win, or 300WM, i suggest the 308, i have shot 308's to a mile (1760yards) without much problem. for $600 more, you can have george at GAprecision.net build you a super accurate fully custom remington 700. what i would do though, is get a FN SPR A1, and shoot away, they're on sale right now at impactguns.com, and are a great deal. then come back here to SWFA to buy optics. to shoot LR if you dont reload, you need to have good mathc ammo at hand like federal gold medal, or black hills. remington did get rid of the sendero.

Too bad Remington got rid of the Sendero line. They were a great factory rifle, back when Remington had better quality control.
